I am in the middle of a head gasket job and I've discovered a bent exhaust valve and broken valve guide on #3.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice or suggestions that has tackled this before...I was planning on purchasing a toaster oven so I can heat the head to 200f and drift the broken one out. I was going to put the new one in the freezer before drifting in and replace the bent valve also...sound good?

I will post some pics once I figure out how...headed off to work - the guide was broken off flush where it exits the top of the head and the valve seal seemed to be holding in place...

Cheers,
Chris

hmmmm what happen ...sounds like you got good plan....take some pics and post on forum ...what the piston look like ...someone obviously screw up belt change.... used heads seem to be available...to break a guide seems like hard trauma .....hmmmmmm

The piston looked fine, valve is not bent horrendously - there was an odd popping at low idle coming from the right side that will hopefully be gone now... The valves were WAY out of adjustment when I purchased the bike, hopefully that had something to do with it!

I am curious to see how this goes for you as well. I am thinking I need to do a head gasket and valve guide seal job on my 75. Thing smokes sumfin terrible when it first starts up. Doesnt smoke all the time though and the bike runs like a champ...

I believe that too high of an oil level and ATF in the fuel can cause valve guide like symptoms. When I have too much ATF in the fuel I get smoke on start up. Also when the bike is hot and I have left it on the side stand. Next service I am going to measure in the correct amount of engine oil and see where my level is in the window. I have read where the middle may be the correct spot.
