What is the easiest way to check a stator?

Joe it sounds like your stator is shorting out intermittently or breaking down. I would try changing the rectifier/regulator first just to make sure before you pull the engine to check/change the stator.
 
okay guys I think ive got it figured out ...probably to late for me but ....after looking testing and all ....its obvious that the two bad spots are the connector block ...witch most replace ...and he it is the big one ....the groment in the back of the stator ....its no different than the connector block ...wires to close together ...even with good contact like in the groment pure wire it gets hot way hot ...the groment is rubber but after heat treatment its like hard plastic ....you can imagine what the wire insulation is like.....im positive this is where mine started shorting under load and testing good else where ....I wonder how many stator were replaced from this groment and bad wire ...sheesh im sure this is where my stator is screwed

I did check rec and reg ..and tried several ...
 
Can't beat a cheap digital voltmeter. It's nice if you get one that has alligator clips as an option. :good:

There are some cheap cigarette lighter plug in ones on eBay for around $5. It is better to be testing charging voltage at the battery if you can as it is more accurate. But on a test ride you can't beat the convenience of just plugging in.

That's a good point, Joe....that dang grommet gets it's fair share of oil on it, and will deteriorate over time. Between that, and the insulation of the wires breaking down where they pass thru the casing there.....looks like as good a spot for a short as anywhere. Thanks for bringing that up! Now I'm gunna have to go look at my old stator, and see what it looks like there. :thanks:

Yup...the yaller wires have definitely changed colors where they pass thru the grommet....
 
im in stator hell right now .....and its not fun at all ....on my mongrel yrs ago I was having charging problems and I cut the connector out hard wired it ....then seeing the heat issue and small wire ..I decided too rol up some wire in length before hooking to rectifier ....never had another problem ...ny idea was it would act like a heat sink ....someone here before the crash ...the electric guru blasted me big time ....but im thinking it actually did take heat out of the stator ....and was a good idea maybe

Joe this may have been covered in another post. To have electrical efficiency you don't want to increase stator lead lengths as that can lead to voltage drop. It is not as critical as in other circuits as the stator is outputting AC current. The rectifier is the device that gets hot from the process where the heat in the stator is not really an issue. Remember these components all live together inside your average alternators that are used on the majority of vehicles ( they do have a cooling fan). The main improvement to be made to these charge circuits is in using a late model Mofset regulator/rectifier.
 
Yeah I don't quite follow how adding a coil of wire to the stator leads could make it run any better.
Passing current, especially through smallish wire should have wire as short as possible.
Even if wire is added in between that's a 1/2" think I don't see how that would help anything.

Maybe I was the one that blasted Joe :smilie_happy:
