I'm trying to remove my ignition assembly on my 80. The vacuum advance is toast. So I have the bike in a bazillion pieces. Got the rotor off. Got the housing loose but it won't pull past the frame crossmember. :sensored:

Question: Does the housing gotta come off? You got the rotor off, this has the centrifugal advance on it doesn't it? Can you make sure the plate is free to rotate while it's still in the housing?
Littlebeaver said he used vice grips to get the vacuum advance bolt loose. Can you rotate the housing to accomplish this?

Then you can turn the vacuum advance counter clockwise (lefty loosy) (count the turns) to remove it from the rod if you can't get the c-clip off.

Just trying to think. I could be full of it. :ahem: The only one I have ever done was with the motor out and the ignition housing in my hand.

I suppose I could do it that way. If I just had 1mm more clearance I could replace the whole thing.

Yes sir he is correct, I just did it again because I was inspecting my vacuum advance and the rest of the unit, happy to report it's still kicking ass guy's..Swingarm has to be removed...What a pain in the ass but it's not all that bad..I find that removing the circlip out of the rear of the driveshaft is way less hassal, I got it out first try with my special tool I made just for it...

Question...
Couldn't you just take the two front swingarm pivots loose, and let it move back far enough to get the ignition unit out, or does the entire swingarm have to be removed? I went thru a similar deal when I was messing with the ignition on mine, and found there was no way in hades for the unit to come out past the swingarm. I was just wondering if taking the front pivots loose would do the trick, or if that would be a pita to put back. You don't need much more clearance to get the thing off....

Okay. Here's how. Remove the vac advance bulb by loosening the retainer screw and unscrew it. Count the turns. then remove the screw holding the advance plate bearing. Remove the advance plate with pickups from the housing and it will come out first. Then the mechanical advance followed by the housing.

no he didnt but the vacume canister had to be screwed off iggy plate remove ...then advancer ....and the the housing can come at a angle some and off ...the way it went ...the tank was out though
