I’m just curious here... the area where my side stand mount is welded to the subframe looks like it was welded by a twelve year old. It seems to have been working okay, and I’m sure the average Joe isn’t ever going to look down there, but is this REALLY Honda’s work? Does anybody else have a subframe that’s welded as sloppily as this or has mine been “restored Ebay style”?

It does indeed look like a sloppy repair, but I don’t see any reason for it to be repaired. Everything looks just fine except for the welds. And I agree, a lot of the other welds on this frame are not very impressive. I’m wondering if maybe they didn’t just let the FNG weld the kick stand bracket on so he could practice.
I think I’ll clean those up before I repaint. You know the old saying...
YOU DONT HAVE TO BE A GOOD WELDER AS LONG AS YOURE A GOOD GRINDER...

The fact is, that a big, sloppy looking weld, and a nice pretty looking weld, are both welds... and while a pretty looking weld is USUALLY done by a welder wielding worldly wonder with wrists of wisdom, that doesn't mean that a pretty weld got a good grip, and it certainly doesn't mean the ugh-ly one don't.

Or I could just as easily say, ugly girls make really good lovers... :hi:

There's some aspects of manufacturing that have incredible consistency (Honda's die-casting being an excellent example). MOST of the time, processes that show such consistency are either totally, or highly automated. There's other aspects where it's NOT so automated, because the engineering time and cost of doing an automation exercise is not worthy of the production run volume, or not within the production run timeframe, so they're done by hand. You very well may have gotten the FNG... or the oldest guy in the plant that still knew how to use a MIG, but was waning of eyesight and battling a little Parkinsons tremor... or mebbie it was robotic, and done in the booth next to a big foundry hammer?

I think the weld is just fine. Not a problem with the penetration, just the cosmetics...
I’m just gonna tidy it up a smidge, cuz I can grind with the best of them, and leave it at that. :Egyptian:

As usual, Dave is timely with his words of wisdom. I suppose I should have qualified my statements above about poor factory welds as opposed to rough cosmetic factory welds. Motorcycle Factories did not look to Future and loving owners detailing 40 year old machines. Ugly welds are just that ugly welds. Still good lovers.

That piece of removable frame is nortorious for rusting from the inside out to the point that the sidestand begins to fail. Replacement frame members can be had on eBay ($30'ish) with some patient shopping. Welds as ugly as yours could be hiding something important.

Use a flap sanding wheel on the grinder and you will look like a master craftsman. Just finished? doing up an old trailer, rather than grinding the gal (new sheet and subframe) and rust I just crank up the amps :smilie_happy: so plenty of ugly welds. I just hope the “glue” sticks. :whistling:
