I wanted to go OEM rather than aftermarket and there is NO WAY my budget can support the 1200 OEM if I could have found one. One dealer quoted me $375.00. I was just lucky to have a 77 and a 78 motor sitting in the garage from a failed 1000 rebuild so it was an easy solution for me as long as it read out good. By the way, those two 1000's cost me $200.00

It could rewound but I never even started to look at the cost. I might do that with the stock stator just so I have another spare because as the old lady once said: "parts is parts!"

The final parts arrived today and were waiting for me when I got home from work. I fired the old heater up and left it go for an hour before I got started and now the motor is in! :music: Gotta love it that there is no cir-clip for that drive shaft.

My pile of parts is getting smaller and the list of things to do is getting smaller, but the floorboards I bought arrived over the weekend, so that has to be added to the list also. If everything goes right, I should have this back together by the weekend, as long as the carbs don't need a lot of work. :beg: :Awe:

Why couldn't these parts have arrived on Friday! I wonder if I feel a cough coming on...

Last night I spend a cold evening connecting the engine harnesses, carbs and radiator and when I went to turn the key... dead battery! So I charged the battery and fired it up today and find that the stator is working fine and there must be something magical when it comes to carb floats because now I have no leak. I had my screwdriver in hand, but it wasn't needed.

So now on to check the battery: 12.7 volts just sitting there, 13.5 volts at idle and at 3500 rpms I have 15.5 volts. I am a bit concerned about the 15.5 volts being too high...

Any thoughts?

Are you using the gauge on the bike, or a voltmeter on the battery to check? Gauges can often be off. Best to check with a multi-meter right at the battery. If you're checking it with a meter, 15 might be a wee high, but it might also settle down after a few miles. Might also be a regulator issue. When I put my new stator in, it also charged a little higher than "normal", but now it runs right at 14.6 most of the time, except at idle.

Meter at the battery. My thought was the same thing: that it might be high because the stator is new to the bike. The only thing that worries me is that it is not a brand new stator. Something I am going to keep an eye on for a few mile for sure.

I would be under the opinion that the RR might need the terminals cleaned and be sure the ground wire connections are clean.

If the battery went dead, it might still need a full charge which would explain 15.5 VDC charging voltage. When my 1100 stator was putting out 15.6 VDC, it was because the battery had died from parasitic load (radio) and two cells were damaged. It would charge, but then the stator started to cook the battery. Replaced the battery with a new (already fully charged) AGM and have not had an issue since.

Your stator is fine Brian as it will not make more volts when faulty just less. It does sound like your RR is letting too much through to the battery but as Gerry said that may be because the battery is not 100%. Make sure that you are running your headlight load when doing this test( real world conditions) :good:

Yea Tony I wasn't worried about the stator. I am more worried about the RR. Heck I am just happy that the thing started

And as luck would have it, I am off on Friday and they are predicting temps in the 50's

Finished it this evening with one minor issue: my bottom mount bolt is now too short with the floorboards, so looks like I wait to put those on. Thanks to everyone that helped me with this issue from the beginning when I was first thinking about buying this bike. Now hurry up warm weather!

I think I actually heard the 1100 whimper tonight because I wasn't working on it  Now that I am finished with this project, the 1100 is next: cams, carb or carbs, new ignition, forks, and fix all the oil leaks. I just need to let the checkbook rebound first.
