Now for the high current test. Take two stator leads and put 12v positive to one and negative to the other you will get a spark do this briefly. You then test between the other stator lead between each of the other leads. Three tests in total. If you numbered the 3 leads this would be the testing procedure:
1-2
2-3
1-3
You can also test between the phases and the body of the stator ( ground)
These tests should be fine with your stator

But only "short circuit" the 2 leads for an instant, right?
All we're looking for is continuity between the leads.

What he said..., AND...

What should I be reading?

You don't use a meter with the high current test, so you are just observing the quality of the spark and it only needs to be fairly quick, just enough to load up the windings. The reason for this type of load test is you may have a break in the windings that still allows a continuity reading but through vibration or current fails.

I'm sure this has been talked about ad nauseum, but I'm new here, so I'm guessing I might just get a hall pass for sticking this in here.

Now, if I had a standard, I'd have been reading this thread and others like it very closely, but I have an Aspencade. And after hearing all the tales of woe a couple of years ago about 1200 stator weakness, it really didn't come as too much of a surprise when mine suddenly stopped charging. The connector had already been hotwired and one of the phases did, indeed, test bad. Jimeny Cricket what a weak link in an otherwise outstanding machine.

I really liked the external alternator approach (which again would be unacceptable on a Standard GL) with the extra power, reliability and ease of repair should trouble arise. Not being very good as a metal fabricator, I bought one of Don's handsomely-priced kits and "Poorboy'ed" mine. Fits snugly under the fairing and looks like it belongs there. Kinda.

Worked like a charm - until I overheated and killed the motor. Fixin' that now.

If I had anything other than a Standard, I would have put a poorboy conversion on it the first weekend I had it. The only reason I haven't, is because it is a Standard.

Actually, nope. I am working on it this morning. Took a break to come in and make a gasket for the pulse generator cover... I'm still waiting on a clutch cover gasket from Western Honda ( no way I am trying to make that!) and while I have the exhaust off, I am going to take care of the rust issue on the tail pipe.

Other than this, I am ready to put the motor back in... :Egyptian:

Hmmm. You guys have me thinking. (Dangerous thing, if you knew me). 1000 stator...
I
I may have mentioned that I'm waiting on a donor motor to replace the once sweet running 1200 I overheated and ruined. I "Poorboyed" mine when the stator went out a couple of years ago. My plan had been to re-install the external alternator even though (I assume) the stator on the donor should be good.

I'm wondering whether it would be worth doing. I'll consider it, but I am anxious to hit the ground running when the motor gets here - Wednesday it looks like. I really don't want to add another delay. There've been enough already.
