going to look into possibly using 1200 wheel on 77 forks ...its not looking good ... so far im surprise at how much cheaper the 1200 disc are compared to the 1000 surface area has got to 20% less ... what a heat factor and seems silly to do to a bike that weighs more ....i certainly dont like the 1200 disc at all ... front tire has to be changed anyway so this is why i will look at things now ... i do like the wheel though as the tire options are greater and ineed a fatter set up in the gravel i live in

I know you, Joe. If you want it, you'll find a way. You would be really happier if you could swap an entire 1200 front end, triple trees and down. I think it might be lower than stock. When I ride my stock 77 now, the first thing I notice is the flexy forks. Even an 1100 front end would fit. 1200-41mm, 1100-39mm, 1000-37mm. All triple trees are a direct fit. Options.

great,idea..a complete 1200 front end.i,ve got 83 rims,to put on my brothers 82.and my old 75 z1 900 kaw.i put a 82 gpz1100 front end.on it.and the rear swing arm off of the 82 gpz 1100.the hunt was the bearings.for the converstion.at napa,for a hour..i really,like the jyd project..my brother inlaw is helping me to put nos,on my 85 1200.single carb,with nitrous...coming soon...later,brothers.. :music: :moped:

ok after further review of the parts department at the doghouse... it seems i have what might be the best set up if i can get it to work.... 1100 82 forks with same size dual piston calipers matched up to the 1200 wheel with the vented rotors is what i have .... if i can get it to work this sould be better than 1200 setup ...as the big caliper pistons on the 82 forks is all 4 .. not to big ones and 2 small ones ... so we will see if i can do it

I'm running one caliper. If you can squeeze the lever and make the front tire lock up, how much more do you need? Might make pads last a little longer, but you have extra dead weight on the front too. Maybe in the mountains they pay dividends too.

Braking is all about dissipating heat as quickly as possible ( changing state of energy) and in theory locking up would seem like maximum braking. In reality when you lock up it increases the speed that the vehicle is decelerating. I can't imagine halving my front brake efficiency as I am currently trying to increase mine as much as possible. At the moment I use maximum front, rear and downshift to bring the Rats Nest rapidly down in speed. On my CBRs I mainly use the back brake for traction control and low speed manoeuvring and can't remember when the bikes couldn't stop quicker than I needed with just the front brakes.

ok this is going to work it seems ....some pics

1200 wheel is fatter and going to be lower a bit ...were going from 19" wheel to 16" wheel as it has played out so far is hooch retains 1000 forks ...and also the 1000 brakes ....the rotors now are 82 slot vented this was easy for me today but they will be replaced with 80-81 rotors cause they bolt to the 1200 wheel and are solid this set up the pads are in the vents some.... just wasnt easy to get them today off the bikes there on .....this was the neat thing in the is deal is that the 1100 rotors interchange between 1200s wheels .....not sure the 1000 calipers can handle the way thicker 1200 through vented rotors didnt try ....

for this to be perfect the wheel would have to mill down some ... but im thinking it is in the shim zone it wasnt to hard to get it to true up with some spread in axcle
image.php

oh it also took the 1000 axcle to work also the 1100 and 1200 axcle wont work on the four bolts per fork 1000 set up ... 1100 and 1200s are 2 bolts per fork and skinnier .....im quit pleased so far ... need 1200 speed odometer cable i guess its different and on the other side of wheel need some help here 1200 guys dont know much here at all .. :builder: :thank_you:

If you have a complete 1200 front end Joe I believe you would be better served using it with the triple tree change as it is a more robust unit with a fork brace already incorporated. With the 86a I am expecting that I will be trying to unlink the braking system for my personal preference. How and why will come once I know it is all up and running and a viable product not just a parts beast for the Rats Nest.

i dont have a 1200 front end ... the 82 front end is probably the best set up for braking ..but simply dont know the condition those parts yet ... this was the thriftiest way and dint interfere with other systems on bike like the hydro 1000 front brake switch and there was no fairing off or brake bleeding going on ....

Joe I think with the setup you have just made the 80-1 speed hub should work.. as the 82 and later used a different speed hub holding setup.. the hub drive unit in the wheel is the same iirc. You would not need to change the drive cable either..

i like it good enough...... glad to keep the chrome full fender ....and get better tires for the gravel roads here ... cant wait to try it :thanks:

nothing dan i like it ... from here hooch will probably get a 1100 swing arm added to it along with the 83 mag wheel thats 16" too just like the front ...with the 1100 final drive ive kind of ran the figures it seems the 5th gear ratio will be right at and maybe a little taller than a 83 1100 stock and this is where i want to be with this bike :thanks:
