as a winter time deal i have enough 1800 parts to see if the 1800 swing arm will fit in a oldwing ... i am very fortunate to have gotten the parts needed to try this ... so far it looks very promising to do this .... i dont have everything needed ...but enough to know .....i will post pics when i get close to doing something ... but i can assure you that this will happen to my first oldwing ... the 79 1000 ....it will be a hooched out 1200 and weber powered id say ... im not real sure yet what the ratio of the 1800 final drive is.. i am assuming it the same as 1500 and 1200 ... but not sure ... i an very excited about this and this will be the mod i will try and get the parts for first to finish it ..

i am very pleased with the set up it has ... and this will really bring some moderin tech to the table for a oldwing build ...the whole idea of having five lugs to loosen and take tire off like a car just makes this super to me ... and tire options are all at the highest level ..... :thanks: :yahoo: :clapping:

i had never seen a 1800 swing arm in person ... now that i have ..its a massive structure ...but also made of aluminum and is not that much heavier than earlier oldwing swing arms ... and is massive enough to carry the load one sided ....i have to come up with 2 pivot bearing as this is where the modding points are when install to work with ..

the 1800 has a two part drive shaft ...that appears to be honda way of moving the drive line over to accommodate a wider rim and tire ....i am probably over impressed as i am not around to many modern bikes ... :smilie_happy:

you can see how the swing arm moves to the left here ..scooting the drive line over from the output shaft alignment as on earlier wings it was always strait

this is the bottom side of the swing arm ... you can see the 1800 has a bottom shock mount deal .... hmmm iguess you cant see it :smilie_happy: i suppose this gave room for the gas tank in the center like earlier oldwings dont really even know where tanks are on 1800s...it also shows its about 13 1/2" wide ... space it the oldwing frames is about 11 1/4"for it to fit in

image.php

ahh how nice 5 lug wheel attachment ...what a user friendly deal...
image.php

this is what really got me excited on this switch ..you can see the honda superb joint at the final drive that kicks over a bit to move center line over for wheel and tire width ... its not a lot but anything helps in a mod like this... :thanks:

this is a 2 part drive witch i just have the one coming out of final drive....there is also 2 diferent lengths of that second part drive shaft ... about a 1" difference ... what ever the deal ...i will make that work ...even if i have to really customize the shaft to work....to me this is like the c5 ignition over any other oldwing ignition its just to good to pass up ....

as for modding the size... i am warming up the hack saw right now ... :smilie_happy: ....i know someone who is excellent aluminum welder

Hack saw in the right hands is sometimes the (Best) or only tool for the job. :good: Example in the Civil War a good Dr was called a Sawbones, for his speed with a saw when they were amputating a limb.Better than an axe i guess. Keep up the good work, think this may be easier done than 1500,good luck :music:

hack saw turn into saw all with 12" aggressive wood blade ...lol it was cold ...all just free hand cutting no marks ...except for file mark for tube removal .....

shock mount had well placed brace to help strength and weld up....

another pic of the meaty brace

cut of center section between pivots
image.php

new width ... sheesh i need the dang pivot bearing to get final for placement for weld up ...i cut all this in about 10 minutes saw all and lennox 12" blade is just short of chain saw ......where the center shock mount brace is ...is about canter of the 1000 frame also...it looks like the off set will be the same as 1500 swing arm ...about an 1"......the excess swing arm i will cut back to the meat brace in the other pics and use excess to fill some gaps for welding ....ive spent more time doing to forum and than the cutting went well :smilie_happy: :builder: :laptop: :laptop: :laptop: :hihihi: :thanks:

thanks tom ... i know a great welder ...you met him too i think v .. he is really good with aluminum

biggest unknown is the shock work ...totally clueless right now what it will be :headscratch: :thank_you:

hmmmmm .... well there is no problems...... on the work i have done so far ....if you were to widen the frame it would all have to be on the non drive side ....plus it would stick out big time ....also cutting the swing arm down will make it look like it belongs to the bike ...still have to cut the section that sticks out by the shock mount .....i am very happy with the results so far .... :thanks:

one more cut....
image.php

really nice cut ....took about 10 minutes...some welding issues ...but all in all ... i think this was the best way ...i feel lucky

image.php

the piece i cut off and the tube piece may get melted down and poured into cavities for welding backing

image.php

now its getting to size .....this will look right at home in the oldwing frame :builder: :thanks:

 Looking good joe.
+1 :good:

"I feel lucky"....... Good answer, unless it's to Harry Callahan. (Dirty Harry, Clint) a welder may want to reinforce the rear welds as there is going to be tremendous amount of leverage on it being single sided. Especially when you go jumping canyons with it. Additional plates on the rear welds would help me sleep better. Maybe the front too since there's nothing like an axle through it, holding it together.

yes eric ...those are the concerns i felt lucky cause of the beef honda put there for the shock mount ...if it had been all the way across id would be super luckly ... but ill take what i got could have been blank .... really all the easy work has been done .. from here there is lots of prep work for welding ... i will do all that ...the welder will only have to weld .. it will jig up big time for alignment and all ...
