I doubt the welder will see any need to fishplate any joints.
Agreed.
When ya really think about how much force is actually there on a motorcycle, it's not much in comparison to the beef of that swingarm to the size A arms on cars. Even our Suburban aluminum A arms are smallish.

well im at a road block on this till i can get some pivot bearing ...to actually set it up for welding ...with any final drive switch ...it involves a lot of parts ...unfortunately on all the switches ive done ...i have only been able to ride the 1200 into 1000 switch and also the 1100 switch into 1000 ...the 1500 switch and this 1800 switch is going take some parts ....

on the 1800 the biggest unknown i have is when the 1800 final is in the 1000 frame ... where dose motor sit in relation to the way the 1800 sits for shaft hook up ... the 1800 for some reason has two different drive shafts that can be use they are 1" difference in length .... also the 1100 and 1200 frame motor sits 1" further away than the 1000 frame .... so its still up in the air what the best oldwing frame to use for this switch as in hopefully plug and play hook up .....

apparently no one has made this switch successfully yet and there no info to be had ....sheesh if i just a 1800 to look at i could figure this out  oh well i will get it figure some how :thanks:

IF you have any type of relationship with anyone at any dealership, say in parts, use that to get talk to their wing wrench. I Use my status as small & independent shop, to get any info that i might need, head wrench asked, if i wanted the older stuff came into their shop as nothing from the last century,is really wanted,& 4 cylinder wings are not wanted at all. Had to say no! As disability would not take kindly to me working,& can hardly keep up on my stuff, as well as my helping friends, & showing the young, that seem to show up now & again to learn, too busy,& can't bitch & don't want to, does no good any way!!!

took a long look into at a suggestion v made ...and this morning it hit me how it could work great .....using the piece i last cutoff ...i cut the ribs and excess metal off ... turn it around and it gave me the pefect cap and curve to fit up perfect to the modded swing arm ...and now there is no problems of welding it up some file work also ...always great to consider fully what others offer in suggestions ...some pics

That's going to look like it was made like that originally! Looks great!
Yes!

slabghost is right, gona look like it came that way. :salute: Ya need to make up a jig,so it's easy to do again,as i would buy at least one for my interstate, one to fit my 1500, would also make tire change much easier & worth the doing. :good:

Looks real nice. Wish I had an idea for the bearings. The only thing I come up with is a sleeve to fit the 1800 opening with the inside diameter to receive 1000 parts. I'm sure you've thought about this a lot longer than I have.

For certain on any dresser would be a real plus, :clapping: on standard would make the job almost pleasant? :good:

seems i have some measurements to work with and also pivot bearing coming to reaaly check things out ....it is still very possible that there will be a drive shaft mod to do ...on the drive shaft that hooks up to the output shaft of the oldwing 4s maybe not ...

as for erics post on the pivot stud being bigger on the 1800 than on oldwings ...this is a small thing to me ... with lots of options ...and as eric said a bushing is the rather easy solution ...there is no reason to think it has to bigger than the stock one just cause of the 1800 final bike is still same weight we not adding anything

ive been looking into the fact that the 1800 has 2 different drive shafts and why .....this brought to the table that that there may be swing arm differences ....well after looking at all i could find i am thinking that the swing arms and final dives are basically all the same ....and the differences are at the 1800 motor output shaft ....the 1800 output shaft is very long compared to oldwing 4s... it also has a sleeve that surrounds it ... its looking to me that on early 1800s up to 2004 this sleeve off the motor is quite long and uses the shorter shaft....and on later 1800s its shorter and the the shafts are longer ... this is still speculation as i have seen a pic of the output shaft of a newer 2005 and up motor ....

this brings into focus why did honda do this ... my guess is early models were having trauma in the u joint ....and making a longer yoke on the drive shaft lessen this ... there was no recall or anything so not sure how much an problem it was or if i am right ...but for sure the shaft is not a strait back deal like on older wings

the likely hood of a drive shaft mod to get this to work on a oldwing is still a huge possibility ...just trying to keep this thread udated as the knowledge i get as i go :thanks:

this is a pic of two swing arms with different part numbers .....this pretty much comferms my thoughts in the above post ....the one is the one ive cut...but as you can see the length are the same .... :thanks:
