It doesn't sound like ignition to me unless you've got a coil acting up when hot.
What can happen is the coil case gets hot which expands a crack open then spark jumps to ground.
See that alot on older cars, not very often on this bike.

I think more likely a fuel delivery problem.
How does it run up until it starts missing?
If good then the carbs are fine.

Have you changed the fuel filter?
Is there rust in the gas tank possibly plugging the pickup screens at the bottom?

If your gas cap vent is plugged it can allow a vacuum to build up in the tank stopping fuel flow.

If you can get it to act up, turn the cap loose and see if it improves.

We'll stick with you til you've found it.

Yous guys is great fer shure! loddsaluck. mrgeo :music3:

checked fuel delivery while bike is running ,plenty of fule comin.bike runs good at idle, then starts to miss and runs good againthen starts to miss and runs good again. when you first start to ride bike runs good for 30 or so mins. starts missing and will finally die ,and will turn over but will not start. left alone for awhile will start backup.ohmned the pulse gnerator, checked voltage on spark unit, swapped coil packs, did wires plugs ,fuel filter, drained carbs, pull the left bank plug wirs and it doesnt affect the motor like it should, right side wil kill motor, left side pulled it will still run.checked and set valves.still same results.gonna do a compression test tomorowfor grins dont believe thas the problem.runs to good before it starts missing.havnt hecked ballaist resistor didnt know that it had one?only thing i havnt changed is fuel lines, then again cant see this as problemas i checked flow after miss process begins.tryed fuel cap ,no help.must be missing something electrical or its carbs. 56 yearsold havnt typed in 40 , another challange.thanks for advice, will keep searching .

We need to narrow it down to whether the problem is fuel or ignition.
Does it start to smoke at all as its starting to die?
Could be 1 or more carbs are flooding it.

Try this,
When it starts to miss, turn the fuel valve off.
If its flooding it will recover.

Agreed. Are you running any cleaner in the fuel? Try this with cleaner in the fuel. Seafoam ,Techron, or your favorite. Remove the top of the aircleaner. Start the bike and rev it to 4-5 k rpm. Holding it there use a large old bath towel and cover the airbox fully to choke the carbs. When it sputters uncover it and let the revs build again. Then do it again a few times. If the high speed circuit in the carbs is partly plugged this will likely clear it. Then with the cover back on go for a ride. Leaving it in a lower gear rev it again to around 5k and close the throttle suddenly and let the bike coast in gear.Do this 3-4 times to force highest vacuum in the low speed circuit. If these don't clear the carbs then you'll need to pull and clean them.

I really haven't had a lot of experience with the electrical side of my GL to help with specific info, however your symptons are exactly the same as I had with my Yamaha XS 650 about ten years ago. Bike would start and run perfect then after 5 to 10 minutes one cylinder would start to miss and eventually die. It would come back to life after sitting 15 or 20 minutes. I still remember the feeling of it starting to miss and surg as the problem started. This is a 2 cylinder, 2 carbs, points and coil bike. I was sure it was fuel or air related and went through the carbs, air filter, fuel filter etc. Also cleaned, dressed and set the points and adjusted the timing. Nothing helped. Ended up being a bad coil. It had two so it was easy to swap and make the problem move from one cylinder to the other. This was the last thing I tried because I was sure it was fuel related. As I mentioned I'm embrassed to say that I have yet to learn much about the ignation system on these Wings. I know there are no points, but there must be at least one coil. Good luck.

Well the problem was , maintence, 30 year old bike, 64000 miles needed timing belts , fuel lines, but most of all needed to check power supply first. BATTERY, WAS DRY AS AS a powder house. Bike would start run and lose voltage and die. went through two weeks ckecking every elecrtral component ,only to find out they were good.couldn't think out of the box it could just be the battery. So I am wingin again. One more question, how many miles before you change timing belt tensioners? Rember guys maintance, maintance, mantainance. REPLACE BATTERY, FUEL LINES,TIMING BELTS,COST, 40.00 FOR BELTS, 50.00 FOR BATTERY,COUNTLESS HOURS TRYIG TO FIGURE IT OUT, BUT LEARNED ALOT.DONT FORGET THE TENSIONERS. THANKS.

That must one heck of a battery to start the bike even dry. Imagine how strong it would be with fluid in it!
