HI I am new to this site and I have a 1982 GL1100 that I am wanting to add an alternator to the bike i think my stator has gone out or is about ready too and I dont want to have to pull the engine, so I have been reading about adding an alternator to my bike. My question is do they have a kit to do this or someone have step by step to doing this. I am preety handle with tools since I have been repairing this bike. I would also like to be able to add driving lights to it. I just finshed putting in new stater, battery, water pump, thermostate and temp sending unit. now i want to improve my electric output. So if anyone can tell me or send picture to help me it would be helpful.

Thank you.
Mike

Thanks and yes that is what I have doing, I noticed my started was dragging and before I change it I was stuck in traffice and noticed that my charging system seem to have dropped to below 12 v at idel and once i started it jump back up drove another 7 miles to get it up and once i got home and let it sit a few mintues I noticed that it would not start up---dead, i did not have anything on and have not added anythig I try to with driving lights but i could see the volt charging system drop way down.

We have a forum section on alternator conversions if you want to check out the various ways other members have accomplished this process Mike. I'm doing one now on my 1200. There are kits but they are pretty costly if you decide not to shade tree it. Click on this viewforum.php?f=10

there's a wiring issue where a connector heats up and is known to melt the plastic housing

pretty sure it's behind the left sidecover area

i'd check it out (wiring and connectors) from one end to the other before starting any other major work

Before jumping to conclusions on the stator do all the tests. Read JoeDrum's story about Hooch and you will see there are many areas for problems. Joe is very experienced with Goldwings and he had quite a bit of trouble sorting out his problem which in the end was quite simple once he found it. :good:
