Right, you cannot add more throw to the clutch by adjusting it. Your speedo cable is probably broke or disconnected underneath the speedo. Mine did it all the time and I finally used blue lock-tite on it. If you do this, be sure you don't get any inside the cable-just on the threads.

Thanks.

I think my speedo cable is broken. I raised the front wheel, disconnected the cable behind the speedo itself and spun the wheel. The cable had no movement at all as the wheel spun. (I had disconnected the cable at the wheel, inspected it and replaced it).

Please provide a link where you have gotten your speedo cables from.

Thanks for your help (everybody)

I just replaced mine speedo cable with one from this store. It appeared to be good quality - better than the stock one it replaced.

I would recommend replacing the plug connection with three yellow wires behind the left side panel with soldered connections. For some reason the plug is prone to corrosion and can cause your charging system to fail. I checked this when I got my wing and it was so corroded that I was surprised it even worked.

Also, there is a good chance your cooling fan switch does not work. Do not worry about it too much unless you plan to ride in a lot of stop and go traffic on really hot days.

I picked up a speedo and tach cable from the Honda dealer, well picked it up after it had to be ordered.
Pretty inexpensive.

Oh wait, have you checked the speedo drive at the wheel is ok?
They are plastic and are prone to stripping.

Pull the cable out of the sleeve, I think it comes out from the wheel end.
If there's a machined square end on what would be the speedo end of the cable then the cable is ok.

Been thinking about this all day...and then I tried something.

The choke, I always use it for a second or two on start up, only today I left it on as I left work. At the first light, high RPM's.

Doesn't the choke system have some moving parts that may get stuck? A rail something? If something was stuck, the choke could be all the way in but the engine is still choked. Am I making any sense?

Thanks All,

Did 2 oil changes (with MMO and Seafoam added the second time) and then got busy and could not ride for 2 days. I went for a ride yesterday and the shifting was incredibly hard. It has gotten quite cold here in Michigan (around 40's).

I went out again today. It was very cold and the RPMs were high---I am assuming that is normal. The shifting was very difficult. After about 5miles or so the bike warmed up and I drove the bike very hard. I kept the bike in lower gears while riding quite fast. The RPMs were above 4-5K for much of the ride. I was cold too and somewhat pissed at the hard shift from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd as well.

The shifting did however get a little better once the bike was "warmed up"--the temp gauge stayed well below half (almost at the quarter mark). When I say its cold here its cold here. I envy those that can ride pretty much year around.

I plan to do one final oil change with Rotella T6 (synthetic) tomorrow and then I am done with oil changes. It is what it is. I will battle the hard shifts next year. I need to spend some time riding the other bikes with seafoam and call it a year.

I will post pictures of both ends of my speedo cable tomorrow and see what you guys say. Before the speedo quit completely I was hearing a loud chirping noise synchronous with tire speed. Then the noise stopped and soon so did the speedometer.

Take care all and safe riding for those of you lucky enough to be riding. I can't even continue painting as it really is too cold and we even got some snow flakes the last two days. But I got over 8K miles on my V-Star in----I got to ride around the National Parks (Utah) this year. We are truly blessed with some majestic roads and views. My other passion (I saw another thread by Dan) is photography.

The clutch on these old wings are kind of quirky.
Like someone said if you have it adjusted to where there is a little free play (in the cable & lever) you should be golden.
If the lever has no free play, drivetrain will stay partially engaged like you're just slipping the clutch.
Just as a visual check you could start the bike while on the centerstand, put it in gear, and pull in the clutch. See it it quits turning the rear wheel.
Another thing I noticed was if your idle speed is too high, neutral can be very hard to find. Service manual idle speed recommended (950 to 1050 rpm)
