I have an 86 I. I went with a friend on a camping trip at the end of last summer to Front Royal Va. Pulling my trailor with about 250Lbs behind her. She took me there and home. Ran like a top. I have taken a couple of small 5 mile trips this summer. The bike sat most of the summer as all the leather was at a shop getting re-done. well the other day I took the bike out and statred it. It warmed up for about 5 min. I threw my leg over her and took off. as I started out she started to buck like she was still cold. so I eased back on her. About 3/4 of a mile she acted fine so off I went westbound. About 2 mi. down the road she started backfiring and bucking.I thought maybe sombody turned off the gas. I reached down and turned the petcock.Started to run a little better. All of a sudden she quit on a dime. I pulled to the side of of the road and got down where I could see the petcock. Stupid me I cut off the gas. Turned the gas back on hit the choke a little and bang she took off. Started out thinking I had better get her home. Rodeo riders had nothing on me and I rode that bronking horse more than 8 seconds. Got her home and as i pulled in the drive she quit right in the end of the drive. pushed her in the garage. Yesterday morning wes out in the garage I hit the choke and hit the start. Started and she ran like a top(did not ride it). My thoughts are maybe she sat hot days cool nights maybe condensation in the tank. PLEASE! any Ideas would be wonderful. :thanks: :thanks:

well it dosnt sound seriors i dont think ...maybe draining the gas from tank and bowls on carbs ...and replace with new would do wonders ...try running some atf mix in the gas to help clean them up some about 6-8oz per tank

Darn things dont run too far after ya shut the gas off.

My guess would be either bad gas or sediments in it. Start by replacing whatever gas is left and have a look at the filter.

(ya what Joe said)

I had two Dr. appt. today . was going to try that in the morning. I have two new filters one is for my 1200 and one is for my old 1500. Trouble is they both look the same with no markings. will they interchange?

the Cross Refference Program shows the fuel filters fit 80 models but I dont see a 1500 in the list

Part # = 16900-371-004
Part Description = FILTER, FUEL

Well to me it really doesn't sound serious. Get a bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner. Go to the gas station and put 1/2 the bottle in and top off with permium gas and ride it. You may feel a big improvement within 5 minutes. I did with may 83 wing.

Might want to dump in some dry gas along with a dose of ATF. Then if it will smooth out a bit ride it at least long enough to burn off half a tank of fuel.

I reread your first post, I would not discount the possibility being an electrical/ignition problem.
You say it ran good then started backfiring, then ran like a top then died all together. Sounds like ignition to me.

How are the condition of the plug wires and plug boots?
Spark plugs, cheap test is throw in a new set.

How's the general condition of the wiring, original condition or have there been hack jobs by prior owners?

Check the plug from the ignition pickups leading to the ignition module for corrosion or bad connection/loose wire.

I had to take my youngest daughter to the dr.s this morning (about to make me a grandpaw soon) I'm planning on working on her tomorrow for sure. Going to be raining anyway. Thanks guys for all the information. Ken

I Have'nt forgot about you fellas, I have been sick and having a really bad time of retaining water. Now I'm getting some things done around the yard(getting ready to b barried in snow) My wife told me she would purchase a 100# propain cylender for me garage (Heat all winter) but really I think she wants to get rid of me.LOL. I DIGRESS. I will be getting back to working on her A.S.A.P. and get back to you all. THANKS SO MUCH.Ken
