My speedometer is whining and I'm looking for a replacement. I've seen some cheap, low mileage 80 or 81 GL1100 speedos on E-bay...just not sure what is comatible.

Does the 81 speedometer fit the 82? I'm guessing that the 81 will work but doesn't have the speed sensor for turn signal shutoff. Is that correct?

just remove yours and add a few drops of 3 in 1 oil or other light oil to the drive and it will likely quit complaining and do its job.

I don't think why not,I got an 83 speedo on my 82 and fitted just fine.Just remember that 80 & 81 has a different wheel/rim size compared to 82 & 83.You may ask will it change the ratio a bit :headscratch: it might it :headscratch: might not :nea: .Hopelly we will get more answers from other members who are more technically competent then me :swoon: . :lazy:

Unless you really want to move to another speedo, I'd just lube up the one you have. To do so without removing it, take the cable off, attach a 2' long piece of vinyl tubing to the cable connection and elevate the other end. Pour some light oil (3 in 1, sewing machine, etc) in the tube and let it sit for an hour or two. Drain the excess from the tube, remove it and reconnect the cable.

Mine has 10,000 miles on that trick and it's not making any more noise.

Thanks for the replies. Haven't tried lubing it yet...had planned on doing that today. Since I have the fairing off for minor maintenance, thought I'd attach the tach cable to the speedometer to test it before I put the fairing back on. Now would be the time to swap instruments if I absolutely have to.

I found rotation speed for the 82, but wasn't sure about other years. I bought a 82 low mileage speedo for $35, and a complete 81 instrument panel, so will test them as well. Isn't the 83 speedo electronic? Sounds like it would take some effort to convert...

the 83 models have the two styles aspencade electronic & interstate mechanical. The conversion to electronic would take time & effort but it is do'able :builder: .

I have both 8o and 82 wings. The 82 has a smaller front wheel and as a result the gearing in the speedo is diferent, which compemsates....this will cause ypurspeed to be off. if you watch your tack. you will be reving higher at lower speeds. If you can live with that OK. The pick-up at the front wheel is the same on both bikes. I tried the swap onto my 80 and could not adjust ,as i drive with the tack and speedo to indicate preformance and gear.

Maybe you can open it up and clean it, I just did my Tach. on my 81 because it was whinning out too...Haven't had a problem with the speedo..View attachment 3View attachment 2View attachment 1 I'd protect the bottom where I have the needle nose pliers crimping it closed with something hard like vinyl siding so you don't kink up the chrome face now on the rear you can roll the crimps out once flattened..It's what I did and now it's working like new...

I have an 82 and I'm pretty sure the speedo I got from the wrecking yard is from a 81. Your 82 speedo has a wire bundle the the 81 DOES NOT. Also, the different gearing messes with the speed reading, I know this because when I ride with my buddy, I complain he's going too slow, and he complains I am going too fast. The conversation goes something like this:

Me- Dude WTF, why are we going only 55!?!
Him - Dude, WTF are you talking about? We were doing 70!

I've been where you are now...choose wisely...I chose poorly. Stick with 82 speedos for 82's.

Got me thinkin here now Randy! My speedo is from the '81 parts bike, but my wheel is the smaller '82 with the '82 speedo drive on the wheel. As far as I can tell, it is working at the correct speed limit. Might be time for me to have my wife check my speed against the car!

What did you clean, beav?
Dan I clean the oil out I put in because all it did was slow the tach down, I wouldn't put 3 in 1 oil in the tach gear area, I didn't know there were plastic parts in the gear area, so I cleaned the shaft and I diluted the oil that I put into the gear box with alcohol...Noise is gone and tach is back to normal..
