Here's my new addition to the family. An 83 Aspy. My cousin and her husband own a bike dealership. He had this sitting in his carcass pile and donated it to me. Going to strip it down and check this frame. From what I've seen so far, it appears solid. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Lemen,

I found this website and the decals match what I have. They have the decals listed under 81-82 GL1000 instead of 1100, but they are the same decals. The 9 piece set is $50 which I thought was enough, but I haven't really found any others.

Thanks for that link, Captaindan.

Looks like you lucked out with that 83 aspy.
Is that a Motad exhaust system on her?

Your welcome. I don't know what the muffler system is except rusty. All I've done so far is remove the fairing and stripped it of it's components and wiring. That was a job!!!

Wow Guess will be seeing another build here :clapping: :clapping: Nice looking restoration project.exhaust system looks like oem to me.Good luck & hope we see some pics. :beg: :beg:

lots of stuff missing but it looks like it might run ....id strap that frame down so it cant move on blocks or something .....and see if the motor is free ...to bad theres no radiator...you will just have to go slow and find parts ....take the timing covers off to get to the crank bolt as a way to see if its free ...dont forget to take plugs out so it will turn esier ....turn slow at first to check that it is not hitting anywhere if it will turn ...good luck

It appears the mufflers are stock with a turn down extension added. The extensions are so rusted, one fell off.
Just so we are all on the same page, the only thing I am doing with the 83 aspy is using the frame for my 82 Interstate. The motor on the 83 is shot. I'm not rebuilding the 83.

well im not sure brian ...but they use to think that springs there were curing waters ...i suspect many were floating face down ...al capone had a house here its a nursing home now ....gambaling was big in the early 1900s them stoped ...and now its back leagle this time ...im not sure what french licked but this place is like living in another country ....when the economy went bad ...nobody knew anything here changed it didnt this place has been an economic disaster for 100yrs are better :hihihi: but its makes it a nice to people like me who dont like so called progress...just a nice little corrupt town and county ...the poorist in indiana

your right i did larry a great guy ....he had a house here forever but over the casino corruption that went on he moved away and hasnt moved back in a long time ...i used to talk to him a lot ...he aways appreciated the fact that i trteated him like a regular guy ...i think he like that better than the hoop la approach ...larrys a competative guy rather its baskitball golf tennis or what ever ....a boy who put in all the time to become the man that had had all the game one could get :thank_you:

Very interesting Joe. I like that exact same thing about this little town I live in..Truth or Consequences, New Mexico....almost like the 1950's here yet we sit on a wonderful natural hot spring and I was able to drive a sand point and have my own hot mineral bath in a stock tank I mounted in a redwood deck...I can walk everywhere in town or ride my little Honda CT.

I was kinda joking but it sounds good to me...
Health joe,
brian

it certainly wasnt the fountain of health that they tryed to say it was ...many traveled far just to die there looking for the curing waters to heal them ....
well crazy water used to be kinda healing in different aspects,i think it still is

Seems I've been AWOL but I have done some work to my bike. (not much though) I'm helping my son fix up my rental house, trying to get my wheat crop top dressed and sprayed, planting spring oats, building new adjustable shelves for my wife's pantry, plus trying to work to pay for all this stuff. :fiddle:
Anyway, here are a few pics of the new frame (known as the 83) and center stand. I cut the bracket off the 83 and found the cross tube rusted, so I am replacing it. The bracket on the 83 was also thin so I decided to use my original off the 82. I found the 83 center stand was in better shape than the 82's so I did some mix and matching. The problem was the 83's pin was rusted in the tube of the stand and after trying electrolisis, heating, soaking, pressing, and just flat out beating, I decided it wasn't coming out. So I cut both tubes of the stands and used my 82 tube on the 83 stand. Clear as mud right? I am hoping to get everything sandblasted and powder coated within the week.
I received my new frame decals in the mail yesterday and they look just like OEM. I also went to my local bearing shop for new steering head bearings and swing arm bearings. The only one they couldn't match is the top steering head bearing. They were 1mm off, so I guess I am at the mercy of Honda on that one.

More pics. I built up the bottom side of the bracket with layers of weld, then ground it down smooth.

I apologize for my inadequate photography skills.

yougoing to have to pick it up ...out joy rideing in the wheat field is not a good enough excuse .....just kidding ...it seems the 83 frame is rather suspect too ...im glad its going to to make one good frame.....its nice to see that well equip with tools to get things done as all farmers are that are not gentleman farmers .....nice job and pics cant wait to see more ....thanks captaindan

Yea, I am mixing and matching. The 83 is solid except for the cross tube. Remarkably, the 82's cross tube was solid but not the frame. Go figure. I had the 83 frame sandblasted in the suspect areas. It held up. If you ever want to find thin metal, get a good sandblast job. It can blow right through those rusted spots and make what you thought was a solid piece, look like swiss cheese. Been there done that.
