On the way home yesterday the tach started to chirp&chatter. It was very loud at times, and the needle would bounce from 0 to 4,000 irratically. Sometimes it would chatter while idleing at a light, and sometimes it would be loudest between 3k-4k rpm, then get a little quieter under 3k. Anyone heard of the cable causing this? or is it the tach itself?

I'd take a look at the cable first, and maybe lube it up. It's a lot easier and cheaper to do than replacing/repairing the tach. And...it wouldn't hurt anything anyway.
Last year, I did some tinkering on my gauges, replacing bulbs and such. A couple of days later, I started hearing a seriously scary noise from the speedo, and the speedo was bouncing around a lot. I found I apparently hadn't gotten the cable fully engaged into the speedo head, and it was floppin around. I removed the cable, and lubed it up, then re-installed it. It worked perfectly, with no more noise.
It's worth a shot.

:hi: On one of my trips through Nevada (Reno) I had the noise that sounded like spedo... I lubed the cable and haven't had a problem since...but it could also be cable you might also spray some lube into the gear of th spedo...It can't hurt as the saying goes :salute: :salute:  :heat: Bob

Found a broken cable. Put in a new one. Reved twice and quit working. :head bang:
Unscrewed cable housing from tach, tach cable was stuck in tach. Used needle nose to remove cable from tach and it twisted a little like it was wound. I poked old cable end into tach and tach will not turn. Then it started raining and I was home alone , so I removed the tach and took it apart. Honda made sure this wasn't gonna be an easy thing to do. Used pliers and penetrating oil to turn and unstick the cable input shaft to round magnet thing. Now it turns. We'll see if I can put this thing back together and see if it works. (or how bad I tore it up)

Well if it's buggered up I have one doing nothing on the shelf.

Ok, I plugged this one onto the cable and it won't turn by cable. I can turn it easy by finger, but with the engine running the cable won't turn it. It did start to wiggle when I reved it, but it ain't working. Wish I knew why. It looks very simple.

So anyways, what yours worth to ya?
