yes if the bike is running good allready then all you need is 78-79 cams .....and you might have to do a lot of work to get to the ignition and make it adjustable ...i did im not real sure this is maditory or if what i did was exactly right on the timing im still testing and not a lot of miles yet....but it seems to be realy nice so far ...the 83 didnt run well before so i dont have a good idea as to how much different it is .....but in low rpm running, take offs and such its nice and smooth

Hey Joe , what did you do to the Breather Box ??? any Pictures ??? what your saying sounds like what we used to do on a 4 barrel breather , take the top off and turn it upside down and put it back on... Man did they ever sound good when you got into it enough to kick in the last 2 barrels .... :music3:

yeah sort of sledge .....the filter has a top on it and another top the breather has at least on mine....then cut the houseing down right at where the filer fits the bottom and everything else is stock ....the filter id exposed on the sides all the way around .....yes it is loud if you get on it ....otherwise it pretty normal ....it seems to run hard all the way to the top ....no flat spots ...it came out nice ..looks like it suppose to be that way....weather starting to break for the season sledge

well it finaly got nice enough for a long ride with the 83 .....it was nice to have two other with me greg and paul ....greg has a 74 sportster and paul has a 88 1500 wing ...both are realy nice bikes ....the 83 ran well never missed a lick in winding and hilly bach country we rode through ...its low end grunt stayed right with the 1500 no problem at all ...iwas quite impressed with it as there was times of full out powering by all three bikes and it seemed i could out power 1500 on the steeper grades mostly do to the weight id say ......but it was quite even tho and the winding roads didnt give much room for playing to hard before serious cornering and such ...the 83 cornered well as did the 1500 i was impressed with it stability ....theres no doubt that the 82 i have with the early 76 1000 cams would stomp a 1500 and make it look bad but there would be lots of shifting to keep it in the higher rpm to keep it from lugging ...i dont know it would be interresting to see how early 1000 cams would do in the 83 gearing .....if i do something like that it well be in a standard model 1100 i think ...im totaly im pressed with 83 and the 79 1000 cams for the low end torque perfect setup for the terane around here ...ididnt have to shift down much period ...the ease of takeoff on steep inclines like we have here all over the place made it nice and hassle at all ....all thee bike had the low end power to handle the hills .....the hard mounted sportster vibrated it pipe loose on the back cylinder and had to stop and fix ... :hihihi: :hihihi: we gave greg the full treatment while he put it back together .....the 1500 is sure a nice torqe dog of a bike the greyhound of two wheels .....sure look comfy ...im sure i coulnt deal with one unless it had reverse pauls did and it was nice in operation....gregs sportster was quite the looker but the vibration was obvious from my veiw on my bike of watching him sqirm around on it ....

anyway a++++ for the 83 ride report of first long trip 156 miles before hitting the reserve tank in a lot of hilly conditions

Joe I saw and have been thinking about a reverse for the smaller bikes, 1000-1200's. I saw a guy who hooked up a starter and a lever to drop a rubber wheel against the back tire for his reverse. This was on a front ended trike. It looked doable. I have one artificial hip and another one in the oven. Another dream to wish for.

hmmmm its tight to mont something on a two wheel bike but im sure it could be done ....i have terrible joints too and putting a bike on the centerstand is a risk i cant take at all....i will give it some thought tho .....that is a dream mod for me too...

well i finaly got the 83 dialed in with its new 77 carbs on it .....its awsome loads of a huge power band ....it has just a slight off idle stutter to it then its all out torque if your into the gas ...just not much to complain about ....its seems the 1100 ignition and the early cams and carbs make a sweet package ... :yahoo:

shifting gears is a frame wrenching thing going on from the torque it has ....

i dont see doing much more than running ATF in it and having fun ....the fork seals do need to changed and the entire suspension needs a total redo springs and all  soon i guess as i can

:yahoo: :Egyptian: :clapping:
You are contained only by your imagination, Mr. Joe!!! :good:

Good to hear!
I haven't done my cam change yet. I am in if-it's-not-broken,why-fix-it mode. Plus now my son can ride behind me (not a long touring though) on XS750-Vetter. But the weather is getting cooler even for SoCal. How much downtime do I expect for my cam change? Any special tools required?

Sounds great, Joe. You're new to early carbs, right? See Randakks site or Octanes posts for curing the off idle glitch known to early carbs. Easy fix without pulling rack out. Make sure you get the right drill it though. Close isn't that close on jet sizes. I found my drill at a hobbyist shop where the have micro drills.

yes im aware of the off idle fix .....but im not going to jump right into it ...the stutter is so slight its not hard to live with ....im going to put some miles on it like it is and check gas milaged and stuff ...with it being an 1100 i will test it on its own merit and see if atf makes any difference .....it runs like a motor setup for high output and slight off idle stutter that comes from the cam and all ...also want to evalueate the plugs and all ...before making any jet change

skirri there realy is no specialtolls realy just needs to be done with a good hand on the wrench is all i have a worded how too ....once you used to my continuous sentencs and bad spelling its not to hard to understand :hihihi:

now these cams skirri are the early 75-77 cams ....this is the same bike i had the 79 cams in that give good low end torque .....and i think i remember you getting some for the cam switch for the leaner for the extra lowend torque .....it dose and with the better 1100 carbs its a great mix also and realy somth on the thottle with no off idle stutter that the high end cams and 1000 carbs has ....for your leaner i think the 78-79 cams are best with the 1100 carbs on it .....

the angry dresser is just that snappy on on thottle and ready to go the fairing and all pose no extra load to it at all it seems ...its difinitly a disguised street rocket for sure...i just love it :yahoo: :Egyptian:

I am already used to your writing style. :hihihi: Actually I like it!

Yes. The low end torque, that's what I want. With full Vetter Fairing and bags, my XS750 still accelerates like a motorcycle. GL1100 sidecar rig OTOH accelerates more like a run-of-a-mill passenger car. If I pull it all the way to the redline, it may be a bit faster but then I cannot hear the radio well.

Okay, I will take some pics of the "so so" cams I got cheap off eBay and ask for the opinions if they are usable at all.

whew went for a ride ride yesterday on the 83 ....everytime i ride the bike its makes the name angry dresser mean something ....i got irridium plugs it now and that sure didnt hurt anything ......it was a realy nice day for this time of yr......what a strong bike it powered right through the gears as it charges the red line fast ....it yanks the bike around a lot out of shear power going through the lower gears ...that says alot for 600lb plus bike...it was fun ...havnt been riding for awhile :yahoo:
