I have a 86-1200 aspencade and I get a rattle sound when the bike is going on highway in 5th gear at around 55mph and up. I do not hear this sound in 1st,2nd, 3rd or 4th do to normal engine noise. The rattle come from the lower front right side down by the valve cover. When I accelerate in 5th gear 55mph and up the noise is constant. Thanks semper7

I wonder if synchronizing the carbs would help, what I do when I do a sync. job on my carbs is i run the rpm's up and watch the gauges, if a slide is sticking the gauges will tell you which piston is hanging up in the carbs, it could be electrical, what do you guy's think, maybe the coils or wire or plugs ?? Valves might need adjusting...??? so many things

Note the rpm and see if the sound can be repeated at that rpm in lower gears. Or run the rpm up in 5th to the same speed and see if the rattle is there. Pull in the clutch at speed and let it coast at idle and see if the noise is present. These steps may help isolate the cause.

Same here - not depending on speed but on rpm.

I believe it is the same as at the 1100: the cludge-basket (hope this is the right word) is not fixed and this makes this noises. But should not be important and an old sickness of this models.

well rudi cludge baskit is not the right word ...but we get it ..and what a great comment thats probably it for sure...the baskit would spin differnt in every gear as related to rpm...im thinking

I have had two 1200s now. The last one was an Apspencade and it was the noisest GoldWing engine I have ever had. I went all through it though and everything mechanical was set up correctly. Rode it for 5 years like that and never had a problem. I think most of the noise on that bike was the primary chain. I think that bike had about 80,000 on it.
The one I have now has 50,000 and it is quiet except for the hydraulic valve adjusters on the right side that will make some clatter intermiitently. Could his problem be the hydraulic adjuster also?

My 1100 (RIP) was soooo silent, anybody thought, this was an electrial powerde bike... :)

The 1200 now sounds like a really motorcycle...

i get that if my rpm's are under about 2200 ( engine starts to lug below 2200rpm ) and i usually stay in 4th gear unless i'm just crusing and trying to get some mpg's out of it but my 1200 is happiest when the tach is at 2500 or above

I agree it sounds like

out of sync, as a 1st on the check list.

My 83' 1100
Had Low oil pressure and made a rattling noise, I checked everything on that bike, I decided to do a oil change, and inspected the Oil filter by-pass (in the Oil filter housing), it was not functioning and did not move very well, and would allow oil to bypass most of the time, this made for a noisy engine with low oil pressure.

It almost sounded like a rod knock.

After I fixed that I have not heard that noise since.

Sounded like a rod knock aye?
Now you have my attention!

I have the same noise and low oil pressure, like 4-6 lbs hot idle.
Do you remember what the low was and what it is now?

Sorry Dan I did not put a oil pressure gauge on the motor.

I was getting a knocking sound with the low oil pressure light coming on, you could tell it was low oil pressure.

my first thought maybe oil pump was shot.

When i pulled the oil filter cover the washer on the filter was missing, the roll pin was very loose, and the plunger did not move real freely

This caused two problems on my bike.
1. Low oil pressure
2. Oil would not HOLD pressure in the oil passages (because of the By-pass)and would back up while loosing pressure, when you stop the engine, all oil backed up, so at start up knocking was bad for a couple seconds,

I had read a post that someone had the same problem i was having, Low oil pressure and a knocking sound, they said the oil bypass was partially bypassing all the time, so I was not getting full pressure through the engine.

I was going to fix mine, but there was a part broken, I was going to go to my local Cycle salvage, But i ended up putting a Randaak spin on Oil filter on the bike, the spin on oil filters have a Check valve in them.

Now my 83' GL1100 runs very smooth, and quiet, No Knocking at all, in either start up or while running, It is as quiet as any of my other Goldwings

I had read on another post that to much movement of the by-pass is also a problem, like the spring being worn out.

That By-pass is actually a Check valve, that will also By-pass.

My check valve was not all the was closed,

The check valve needs to be all the way closed to provide max oil pressure.
