Have just trialed the Delorme inReach Explorer for first time. It will be a learning experience. Tracking points and tracking log functions are still being ironed out. I think I have the messages identified and how to use them. I have learned how to "pause" the track while having coffee and such.

The Earthmate App on the cell phone is a good way to use the Delorme inReach Explorer. It makes changes on the unit easier and much quicker.

I will mostly be using the tracking log on most trips because the basic plan charges for all tracking points. Have downloaded the tracking log but need more practice to get better with this.

The basic monthly plan only gives 10 text messages. Except for the preset messages, 3 in number, all other text/email messages count against your allocated number. An email or text received counts as one against your plan allotment. A non-preset email or text message that is sent counts against the allocated number of text (email or SMS - no difference in which).

To activate the unit, you have to purchase one of Garmin's plans, monthly or annual. This is on top of the activation fee.

The reason I bought the Delorme inReach Explorer was that it was the only unit there and the cost was in my favour. I had already determined the inReach SE version was probably the unit I would get.

I think I've only scratched the surface. Lots of info on the web.

Think I should do a layman's version of what this is and my impressions.

Cheers

Planning and trip prep going well. Have decided that my bikes need another safety item - dash cam. Have been researching these units and prices vary from say $50.00 CDN to $500.00 CDN for the higher end such as the Innovv K2 system. Victoria is a place that has a lot of new and older drivers, better safe than sorry. Will look into capturing photos as well. Maybe a good video software.

My research has shown that, if possible, get a unit that has the following desirable spec items:

Waterproof - all items. Intend to put the screen in a secure spot so not necessary in my case.
Cameras 1080P HD front/rear
Large SD card as possible - the one I have ordered uses a 64 GB SD card
G-force

Nice to haves:

GPS recording
Remote button to capture photos
Parking Monitor

All the units I looked at have the G-sensor lock for accident purposes.

The unit I have ordered is: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/2-7-Dual-Lens-M ... rk:46:pf:0

It is an inexpensive off shore model. Read a lot of reviews on various units and some are all over the map, some not. I settled on this one because it has all the features I would like. The cost is equivalent to 2 cases of 24 so I'm not out a lot if not satisfied. I looked at another inexpensive unit that a friend is using and he is pleased with it, a Teepoa 1080P Dual Lens 3 inch LCD screen inline control. I have sent a question to the seller asking if it is a dual or single channel recorder - dual is preferable.

Regarding the SD card. I have read that a person should purchase a high end SD card to ensure good recording. Have to educate myself on these.

If it works out will order second unit.

Cheers

I posted the one I have ordered. Lots of choice but being an economical Canadian I went with the unit in my post. When it gets here I will do a post about it. Lots of new items to keep oneself busy.

If it works not too bad, it might be a good unit for your bikes as well.

Cheers
