I have recently changed my belts, adjusted my vales and replaced a set of forks..( the valve equipped one did not have any rebound in it.. sagged all the way out..) well took it for a ride on friday night.. and on the way home keeping up with traffic.. I noticed I was doing about 82 MPH.. and the bike was smooth.. used to vibrate a bit at 70... seems it will do 60 at 4k and 70 below 5k and 80 is just over 5k... and this is at 1/4 throttle!!!! ( i don't ride H*%% bent for leather WOT like some folks) all I can say is wow!!! Take your time check your belts and marks carefully.. don't rush or skip... adjust valves and the recheck.. adjust again,, recheck.. and then check at t1 and t2 when checking each side.. glad I did..

Were the belts off a tooth? How out of spec were the valves? I wonder if the biggest difference was the fork change? Bad fork/front tire performance can make all kinds of bad stuff happen.

When I first got mine I had to replace the valve cover gaskets to cure oil seepage. I didn't think the valves needed adjusting but felt stupid not going through the motions since I had the covers off. I did it like the manual says. About half of them were just a tad tighter than what I'm used to feeling, so I went ahead and adjusted all of them to my comfort. When I got it all back together and started it up, I immediately noticed a difference. Idled smoother, reved smoother, etc. As I pulled out of the driveway I was impressed. I am a happy believer.

These are interference engines so the tolerances are real close. That being said, the valves have to be right on to get the smoothest performance.

I'll tell ya Joe, I pulled my '81 engine that vibrated real bad and dropped in the '83 engine that is a s smooth as silk! Not only that, the gearing allows me to ride at 70 at 4k!

Belts looked fairly recent.. Honda still bright on the belts.. cam dead on bothe sides... and as for the valves.. can't say.. seems there was a groove mark on an aftermarket pully that I thought was the timeing mark.. it wasn't and turning the motor over seemed to lock it.. so unadjusted all valves until I figured this out.. the groove was 1 1/2 teeth off.. .. timing mark is actually a small dot..   so ran the adjustment 4 times and then did the t1 t2 /checks/adjustments and when I turned it over about 5 times by hand it no longer stopped anywhere.. and the forks were definitely some of the problems.. BTW gas milage seems to be up also

HEY... the newbie thats been a bother for the last 2 weeks.... does anyone know of a good book that informs what all the parts are... and what they do etc...??
i mean i have been reading these posts.. and read things like 'cam dead on both sides' etc... i have no idea what that means.. and where the part is located
and yes i watched some carb timing videos, but it fails to show what they are turning... where it is..etc... so i think the best thing for me to get a beginning understanding is to read something that tells what things do, and where they are located... etc...

one or two books.... then i can start talking correctly... instead of saying the cover thingy connected by teh wing nut.... :swoon:

A fine place to start is in the gallery.
gallery/album.php?album_id=32

At that link we have
Owners manuals,
3 or 4 shop manuals for the 1000 and 1100 Goldwing alone.
Lot's of references.

A very good read is GoldWing, the first 20 years.
This book will really increase your fondness for the GoldWing.
