Dan, you really are the man! Name the day and time, and I'll be there! It will be an honor to meet you!
:thanks:

For what it's worth, I mounted the engine case in the frame, and everything lined up nicely. I am concerned about the strength of the damaged section - if that part of the frame were cut free, I'd bet it could easily be bent by hand, so what will it do under stress?

The bike sat for over 12 years, so it's been bent at least that long.

That last shot looks worse!

I talked to the gal that knows the guy we got this 83 from.
She thought he gave us the paperwork so I'll look around for it but she can get in contact with him so it shouldn't be a problem if we need to get a copy of the title.

This weekend not so good but next is wide open.
I'd really like to see that frame first hand.

Let me know what works for you.

The frame isn't just to hold the engine in...it also has to support the weight of the bike, and our fat arses. The damage in that area seems like it would also effect the steering if it happens to flex any while riding. Plus..if it did happen to snap while riding, you could be making a u-turn you didn't plan...or desire.
With the posting of the other pic, I'd have to agree wid Dan....replace that puppy. Then later, if you want, you can shop it around and see if a good fabricator could cut out the bent section, and replace it.

Steve I wouldn't ride that bike with a frame in that condition :nea: I would rather swap it. :help:

What is the difference between the 80 and 83. I have an 80 that is in good condition. Has no title but is legal. If you scrap that frame I think you could transfer the Id tag. If someone on this forum wants it they can have it for shipping cost. I'm in N California.

The '83 frame has additional brackets for the metal brake lines, and one for the turn signal canceller angle sensor. Thanks for the offer on the '80 frame, but Dan was kind enough to give me the one off his '83 parts bike, which I hope to start restoring soon.

Because I know how and can I will tell you that the time and cost to fix that frame, because it is bent in the curve, would be more than the frame is worth to do it right. Replacing that section is the only real fix. Dan's offer is the best so far. If you want to play with it later let me know and I'll cut out a piece of a parts frame and send it to you. With instructions. :smilie_happy:

Thanks for the offer, it's much appreciated. I took Dan up on his offer, and the '83 has been built around his donated frame. Now I just need to get it registered...never cheap at CA. DMV!
