Hello everybody, I posted last week on the head gasket thread about a blown head gasket. Now that I got it apart and am checking everything out, I find a slightly bent intake valve.

I bought this bike 4 years ago and put 30,000 miles on it on it and all along there was a tick coming from the right front head area. Nobody could figure it out and the bike ran great so I didn't think much of it. The compression was decent on all four cylinders (150psi) but never did a leak down test ever.

Anyway there is no way I could have bent this valve. Do I just buy a valve and lap it in? The seat looks OK. Can I use a drill and lapping compound?

I measured the cam lobes and they are plenty with in tolerance. None of the valve guides seem abnormally loose. I am replacing the seals also.

There is 70,000 miles on the bike.

Hiya Randy,
I'd say you be perfectly able to buy a decent intake valve and lap it in...
since the valves are adjustable you'll want to go over them all once you get her back together.

let us know how it goes..
:good:

Lapping a new or used valve is fine.
Use the medium compound first to remove any pits and "cut" to get a even mating surface then fine to polish the seat and valve. Should take very little time.

Just left advance auto and all I see is one type of lapping compound for 4 dollars and the old fashioned hand lappers for 8. Is there something I can make for free to use in a drill?

On the valve seals, any trick to changing them?

No, those are super easy.
Pop them off with a screw drive then lube the seal and valve stem with a smear of grease and pop them on.

Just use your drill(preferably a variable speed). Put the compound on the valve, stick it in the head, and then attach your drill to the valve stem. Spin the valve while applying light pressure on it, pulling on the drill. Pop it off the seat quickly every few seconds, so the compound will "flow" around a bit. I've done many heads/valves like this. As long as the valve is straight, and the guide is not worn out, this'll do the trick. :good:

Brilliant! Thanks guys.

I just love the removable suitcase bags, and the lack of all the plastic. I hate to upgrade to a newer model goldwing because I don't like the closed up look. But the conventional seat is hard on the wife. Is that an upgraded seat on yours?

Thank God for progressive air shocks. I have been thinking about a trailer.

Another question, do I need to clean all the carbon out of the exhaust port? Just normal carbon, nothing extreme.

Any crap you can clean out of those ports will let it breath better.

I have one, actually I have many and a 1/2 dozen heads.

Make a donation to the forum for whatever amount you feel comfortable with, should be at least enough to cover shipping of course. PM your mailing address and I'll get it out asap.

I figured it was somewhere obvious. I just remember seeing donate buttons on the other forums home pages so I was looking there.

My shipping address should be on the paypal receipt. Would UPS or FEDEX be to much to ask? It would take forever for the mail to get here.
