We had a thread way back about how to build a device to hold the brake lights on while stopped, I guess it got lost but I still have the diagram if anyone is interested. Or you could buy one of these https://signaldynamics.com/index.php?pag ... &Itemid=77
though I think it would only work with the speedo that has a speed sensor for the auto cancel turn signals.

Here it is.

The relay you find doesn't even need 87A but make sure 87 is "normally Open" not "normally closed" since they are available both ways.

OK since the clutch switch and neutral switch can both supply a ground for the latching relay, if you have it in neutral or have the clutch lever in, touching the brakes make the brake light stay on until you release the clutch in gear. I don't think I will bother with this one, but thanks for the idea! I like investigating the possibilities.

a thought: (we have state inspections) If I have the bike in neutral at the inspection station and they test the brake switches, the brakes will stay on. Failure, I believe.

if they test with the clutch pulled in, but that could easily be bypassed with a small toggle.
I like the idea. especially if you have some kinda flashing or pulsing unit on your brake lights.

That's right.

In that ground circuit there is a Silicon rectifier (diode) so it's important to tap the ground on the start relay side (or clutch lever side) not the neutral switch side of the diode or the action will work only with the neutral switch, unless you WANT it to work with only the neutral switch.

Yeh, here in NJ it would fail if it does not release when the handle is released.

seems like new jersey has every money making scam and regulation known to man in place   :fiddle:  :cheeky:
Joe, you are not kidding! They tax us on everything here! We have gotten to the point that we are so poor that we can't even afford to pay attention! :smilie_happy:

I do like the idea of the brake hold light, particularly at night. So much background lighting on the city streets that cars will not see just a motorcycle tail light when the brake light is off and get rear ended! Happens a lot around here because drivers all think the road is their personal piece of real estate!

or use one of these:

$20 with shipping, fully adjustable. Seems much safer. I think I might just add it to the trunk lights, not the regular brake lights. I have plug on the trunk I can unplug for inspection easily. :)

That's a modulator, not what the relay in this discussion is intended to do.

I already have a brake light modulator but I'm going to install the relay too as soon as I have some time.

While everything is open I'm also going to install a fuel shutoff solenoid valve for the times I forget to turn the petcock off.
(Hydrolock one time is enough)

Naaa, I hydrolocked mine three times this winter! It is the easiest way to tell if your battery is really charged! :smilie_happy:
Once I stopped the carbs from leaking into the intakes, no more hydrolocking. It sure is not a good sound when the engine stops suddenly! (Good thing it was my old '81 diesel engine)

The solenoid valve arrived yesterday. It's larger than I was hoping but I have a plan to install it with a 1/8th inch brass nipple directly to the fuel pump. I'll post pics in a new thread.
