ok kinda wondering been reading this thread and while mostly lost on what c5 was I googled and found the setup your referring too now for the million dollar question. I read the installation instructions for the gl1000 kit and it does not look like you have to remove the engine to install it so wondering if removal was to make it overall easier to install or other reason? or is this one of those deals where to do it without removal you need the hands of a three year old to get in there

Sadly, on the 1100 Mother Honda put the ignition unit at the back of the motor, so while the 1000 ignition is on the back side of the left head and easy to get to, the 1100 and early 1200's require the motor to be removed or the swing arm removed. Removing the motor while time consuming really isn't that difficult. I see a 1200 motor removal in my future again... :hihihi:

If I had to pick which one thing was the most difficult to do during this conversion, I would say it was putting the cover and bolts back on the ignition housing after the motor was back in the frame. A minor inconvenience to obtain the rewards of the C5.

Hey MysteryRider, not knowing what bike you have, this is my plan.

'75 camshafts in '82 heads. (got all that going on already)

Put the C5 in the left head and protect it all with a standard GL1000 points cover. and just cut off the '82 ignition system.

That's how I plan to do it.

mines a 79 and while all that sounds interesting this ignition kit stretches the limits of my abilities at this point to the limit and then some . I will likely cheat and work with my mechanic on this once I order it.. I have a pretty decent deal worked out with him I help do everything I can in his shop he bills me at half price and only bills for the exact time he is helping with it so in the end I save hundreds and have him to fall back on if I get in over my head... not to mention access to his specialty tools

You might be surprised. The most confusing part for me was wiring up the power lead and a phone call to Paul cleared all that up.

the wiring would be one of the easier parts for me honestly and I hate to admit this here but setting the timing is my weakest link of knowledge as I am completely clueless in that area.

I am impressed that you mechanic is charging you half price, normally you need to double the price when teaching!! :smilie_happy:

That was the easiest part. Set the crank at TDC and then turn the encoder wheel until the little red LED is lit. When that happens, lock the encoder wheel down and your timing is set: that simple.

sounds simple enough just have to read the manual on how to find top dead center lol

Yup, that is just as easy. Take off the cap on top of the motor and the cap on the back of the motor that covers the rotor bolt head and turn the motor through using that rotor bolt head until the T1 mark lines up.

Dont bother. I have the full installation guide on our website

The timing part is clearly shown and is the easiest part. Don't forget to replace the inspection cap (I always forget) or you'll get an oil bath.

We have the coil placed so you do NOT have to cut the airbox horn, but it's a tight fit so take your time rotating the coil caps and it fits. In my opinion this is the toughest part of the installation.

I've read the guide a few times now theres still a few things that are confusing me with the instructions but will get to those when finances say I can afford to order the kit. right now got a huge family vacation I'm saving for and spending that much on my toy would mean I sleep with the toy for a long time lol

Well, in the dictionary, "wife" comes before "wing", "girlfriend" comes before "goldwing", and "mate" and "momma" come before "motorcycle". However, "bike" comes before them all, including "bride"! :smilie_happy:

Oops - OK, back on topic...

At 9 pages long, it was bound to happen at least once. :smilie_happy:
