Cooling Problems

Mike I wonder if the broken recovery hose was your only problem. If you were low on coolant the bike would get hot and cold like you described ( the only other situation that I can think of other than a faulty thermostat)

Got another recovery tank for the old girl and the thermostat (180 deg.) opened up at 220 degrees.. Can't find any leaks in radiator or hoses. It now has a joedrum thermostat in it, it's wide open at any degrees. lol  :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy: Now I got to muster up enough energy to put her back together, someday. :heat: :heat:

While it is apart wasn't there a bypass hole that needs cleaned or looked at .I seem to remember a post from Dan on that small passage from the water pump to the thermostat..

1200 doesn't have that bypass coolant passage. 1100 does, I don't know about the 1000.

:builder: Got the cooling system put back together today, minus the thermostat. Filled with coolant, cranked and ran it for a bit, small drip of coolant coming down from behind the replacement recovery tank. Removed the recovery tank, small crack on back side within 1/4 inch of bolt that holds it on. :head bang: I only got one tank left to try, I guess they get brittle after so long. Temperature never got over three bars while on the lift.

i guess three bars is good ... never been around the computer stuff gauges
I guess if you have 6 bars, it's good. If you have 4, hmmmm... :whistling:

a 24 pack will fit in the trunk, I can testify to dat.

Ahem, cough, cough, back to the topic at hand, (so we don't get our wrists spanked) the cooling problems appear to be fixed and are awaiting a test run when I finish putting the bike back together. :smilie_happy:

Can't wait to hear if the "joedrum bypass" works for you. My 87I runs rather hot too, never hits the red but enough to cause the lifters to tick. Down here in blues land it's 90+ with 90+ on the humidity too. I'd rather wait a lot longer in the winter and breath easier in the summer with a cooler motor.

As for your feeling bad and can't take the heat I truly hope you get to feeling better, I have the same sort of problem and the VA can't figure it out either (either that or they are truly incompetent).

Good thread to all, thanks...... John
