It is a silicon release agent used on the tire moulds during the manufacturing process. Good tire shops often wipe down MC tires with a solvent to reduce the run in slipperyness.

Hmmm...why don’t the manufactures clean them up .....sheesh ..

I'm glad they don't! The manufactures would just use this as a reason for increasing their prices. I've mounted enough tires in my lifetime that I am aware that it is there, so I take it easy for the first 100-200 miles, but I'm just a backyard mechanic so I may be doing it wrong...

Well all this talk about how tires are so special ..but there coated in silicone ..lol ..kind of makes the argument laughable ...I’m no racer but .. I can tell when I got better traction ..better stopping power better in the rain ..and last longer ...and handles fine ...I can only speak for 1200 darkside ...

All new tires use silicon as a release agent and also a protectant. It just a change in manufacturing techniques and you need to do the first hundred miles or so with this in mind. I have seen people loose control with 4 new tires on a slippery road because of this process not being adhered too.

I'm now 3000 miles into this double darkside thing so I wanted to update my opinion on the matter. So far, I've used 3/32", but I suspect a lot has to do with my recent trip.

Does the tire being mounted in reverse help shed water? I can't say for sure if the new tire or the tire being mounted backwards made the difference in the wet riding I did, but it hugged the turns inset ot dry conditions.

Initially there was a different feel to the front of the bike - it just felt heavier, but that only took a few days for me to get used to it. I will be doing the same thing to my 81 and 87.
