Duplicolor engine paint - 'resistant' to gas or not?

I stripped/primed and painted my gl1100 with dupicolor engine paint and then clear. The motor is in the frame now ready for the rest of the parts (slow process).

I read on the ngw forum something about clear coat not being a good idea - that gas was going to destroy the finish.

I thought it was duplicolor engine paint/clear and therefore resistant to gas/oil.

I don't want any gas getting on my paint!! And especially don't want it ruining it or having to do it over.

I have had gas all over the top of a gl motor in an attempt to get some carbs working after a rebuild. I put an o-ring in the wrong place so my bad.

I'm paranoid!

I am motivated to work on this thing but it is like 2 steps forward, 2 steps back, no money to buy stuff/money to buy stuff/ no time/ time/break something/fix/ repeat.

I am inclined to keep gong and not worry about. On the other hand I will be #$sed if gas gets on it.

In hindsight I guess I should have used a different paint - ?

Any advice?

Hey Pony Ruiz,
More than likely if you appplied the paint as per the insructions you'll have no problem if gas gets on the paint as long as you wipe it off right away. And what parts were actually painted? Someone very reliable recommended that brand of paint this morning so I'm sure it's high quality.
Why not up load a picture of the work in progress?
Ciao Dude :clapping:

you asked for it! I am still trying to figure out what I am doing with this bike. It has going through some revisions - in my mind!

frame and potential seat - came off my 83

I have some different head covers i am going to use - drag specialties. going to get powder coated - color? I was thinking black but with the fins alum.

powdercoated wheels - kinda krinkle black - i sanded and put clear lacq. on the alum part - pita!

parts, parts and more parts - there is more behind that wall and up above.

the big dog. i love this bike. i keep trying to think what i'd like to try next.....???

FYI...I used the Duplicolor paint and clear coated while still tacky and more than 2 years later, my paint is still hard as nails, glossy and have not had any issues with gas breaking through the clearcoat (at least not yet). Pic when finished:

D: I don't know I might have to show up once in awhile....

I am approaching getting back on this thing. Weather/work/motivation/justifiable bike $/lack of knowhow and of course a bike I can actually ride all contribute to not working on this thing.

I need a diff. approach i.e. one thing at a time...

McG: thanks for that! I can rest easy at least on this question - on to others.
Damn nice motor. That is Art man!

I did duplicolor engine enamel yellow + clear on my BSA.
In my case, clear was a bad idea. The gas ate it and I got a permanet streak off of the gas cap.
Before that I just had duplicolor engine enamel yellow only and it withstood the gas.

Now I have the gas tank painted with duplicolor yellow followed by two part polyurethane clear and that is okay with gas so far.

Out of curiosity, did you paint the Duplicolor clear while the yellow was still tacky?

Hmmm, they think gas is going to ruin the finish? Maybe they should "fix" their gas leaks instead of using gas resistant paint...I'm just sayin.

~O~

I had a leaky gas cap for sure. :hihihi:
Since then, I put a new gasket, even bought a new gas cap. But it leaks the gas from the vent hole when the tank is full. And being a gas tank, there is always a possibility of spill when filling up.

Yeah pardon me, I'm a bit of a smartass in the morning. :whistling:

Not a duplicolor but I had a gas leak from CT90's gas cap vent hole the other day and it ate the paint around the cap. I am pretty sure it was a factory paint. The paint getting old?

I blame ethanol for this!

Skiri, don't mind ~O~, last I heard, he was about to tell a joke about women to his female work partners and hope he does not get clobbered!
