skirir:"Now I have the gas tank painted with duplicolor yellow followed by two part polyurethane clear and that is okay with gas so far."

So should I put more duplicolor over the clear or put a two part clear over the clear duplicolor?

In any event I am gong to have to paint it where it sits now as in the pic....not fun but better now than later

thanks

I am not sure how duplicolor clear reacts to two part polyurethane. Hopefully no bad reaction but maybe you should wait a few weeks so the duplicolor cures fully. That's what I did.

Hey Pony,
The best motorcycle painter I know told me recently to clearcoat beyond the color around the the filler neck so gas won't get between the primer and the paint on the tank. My K100RS has an issue now because I did'nt sand the old paint off or seal the primer from potential gas contamination by shooting the clear beyond the color onto the metal of the fillerneck.- I'm just saying!
After seeing the piuctures I see why you were so worried about messing up the paint job.
By the way are you a member of GWRRA? And if you are, will you be attending the Wingding in Ft. Wayne?
I'm planning to make the trip even if my wing isn't in tip top shape. A pretty ride is nice but it's still about the ride!
And by the way the pictures looked great.
Ciao Mike

Atta boy ~O~ I had faith in ya, thought a double dog dare was in order, but quess not :music: :music: :music: :music: :music:

skiri: that stuff looks like the ticket. I'm going to give it a try.

Spyder et al: initially I was just worried about the case and if/when gas gets on the top of it from the carbs leaking or somesuch.

I hadn't even thought about the gas tank. Doh! I am def. going to spray the top of the case where a carb would leak and leave the rest of it....

Going to paint the whole tank clear - over the rustoleum I have on there now.....

I feel better already.

Thanks

Spyder - I'm guessing GWRRA has got something to do with GL's. Not a member. I'll be lucky if I get in one good long ride this summer around WA. Sound fun.
Adios, que le vaya bien.

I did find out one thing when I went to my local auto paint store to inquire about putting the 2 part clear over my engine paint and misc. parts. I orig. went in there to see about paint for the body parts and go to talking about the fact I was going to use a two part urethane...

They are/were not fans of 'rustoleum'. Apparently it is not compatible with the two part clear. I did paint a few misc. parts with it though. Like the gas tank. I might have to sand down the part that could get gas on it (i.e. the whole thing? i hope not) and paint with duplicolor or laquer based product if I want the clear to adhere and not wrinkle the paint.

Rustoleum is a "non curing enamel" was the comment I got. I have had it wrinkle on itself after what you would think would be plenty of drying time. I am going to follow their advice.....

I did test the paint on the motor by rubbing with a gas soaked rag. no affect. that of course is not a puddle of gas. I'm going with that.

I thinking now I might just get this thing put together and let it sit for fear of getting it dirty or scratched!

not.

Once the motor warms the paint will cure and harden fairly quickly. You should be okay with that if you get any spills cleaned of quick. Rustoleum like some other paints is incompatible with other paints as topcoats. Even compatible paints have a set procedure to follow if a topcoat is to be used or it will wrinkle badly.

Painted my motor with Duplicolor.

but I did not put a clear coat, as I was reading that the clear coat can yellow after time.

degrease the engine 5 times before paint, then roughed up engine with a red scotch-brite

I shot my engine with 5 coats color

I painted this engine a year ago, But i did rebuild carbs & set floats, & rebuilt fuel petcock so that i would not have fuel leaks, I am not a fan of bike ala flambay.

I use Rustoleum off the can with brushes to paint sidecar frames etc. Thick and durable it seems.

GL's gas tank has that plastic spill guard around the fill neck so you should be okay. Even if the paint around the hole starts to go away a bit, you can always touch it up with a brush.

I've painted quite a few cars and managed a Maaco franchise for a couple years. But I don't really like painting much.

Actually now I remember that I did use Rustoleum can and brush to paint my GL's gas tank and frame. I was lazy so I didn't take the tank out of the frame nor pulled the engine off. I just painted the places I could see and reach. No major spills but the paint is still good.

Skiri:

I received my 2 part aerosol. I see that it is high gloss. I didn't look at that close enough.

I am not a real big fan of high gloss. Can I tone it down by wet sanding?

thanks

looks like the same stuff they had at the automotive paint store for $25.
