Hi, new owner of an 81 and I've gone over it and I'm making a list of things the I'm not sure about. The bike starts and runs fine however the exhaust seems a little loud to me. When I looked underneath I discovered that the crossover pipe is completely missing and that the holes in each muffler where the pipe should have been have been filled with muffler cement. There is a small amount of blow by at each patch. So my question is how will this effect the bikes operation? Is this a comman fix? Other then the missing cross over the mufflers are otherwise in good shape. I wasn't planning on a new exhaust at his point so is fixing the patch and running without a crossover an option?

Second I have been looking at the 4 guage cluster that sits above the speedo and tech. It looks to be stock because it has a Honda voltmeter, ambent temp, clock and altimeter. The only one that works if the voltmeter. To me the clock also looks a little out of place because it has a white face while all the other guages are black. I was going to pull the cluster and have a look but I was just curious about the clock. Thanks.

No harm in running the exhaust without the crossover pipe. The purpose of the pipe is to equalize backpressure somewhat from side to side. My 81 doesn't have the cluster you have so it may be grafted from another model. I don't know anything about it.

Removing the crossover will make it run a bit louder with more "pop" than an even tone.
I think performance is affected slightly because the crossover helps to reduce back pressure also but the effect is minimal.
Personally I like quiet so I'd be looking at a way to make a new crossover.

Post a picture of the gauges, curious what they look like, I don't think Honda put an altimeter on your model.

I have one of those too it was on a fairing I bought to replace the one that came on my bike that was all cracked up. I didn't use it there is a bracket and it just screws onto the fairing so there will be 4 small holes if you don't use it. All the faces on mine are black but the glass on the clock is all cloudy so I thought it looked better without it. So one of my future projects is to get new gauges and restore it at least with a new clock and voltmeter I'm not sure I need an altimeter or thermometer.

I sold the original faring that came on my 80. it hat the clock, altitude, Volt and temp all round and black faced (clock diden't work) I replaced the whole fairng with an 92 nowall i have is Radio and volt meter. I never did need the altimeter as I never left the ground. :smilie_happy: I am not a slow driver and not a fast driver I am only a half fast driver . :Egyptian: :Egyptian: :Egyptian:

Well guys I would love to have a array of gauges like that if anyone turns one up and wants to sell it.....I can't find it on the internet....even a pic of it....

I would love to have a built-in altimeter since I have bad lungs and need to keep track of where I am altitude wise...I have one in my van and I do have a portable one but it would be great to have one in a cluster with clock, temp, etc.

Hear is a picture of the gauge cluster.

Here is the picture of the guage cluster on my bike. Note that the clock doesn't match the other three but it does say Honda on it. I haven't pulled the cluster yet but I assume they must be powered from the battery.
