Today I started the tear down of the front end so I can rebuild the forks and came upon something that has me perplexed. I think I know the answer to my first question, but I need to ask it anyway. If I am right, then I have a second question.

According to the diagram, the springs in the fork should be two:


1. I have one long one. Has Kilroy been here and put a Progressive spring in to replace the stock spring?

2. Is the air needed with Progressive Springs in the forks? I thought I read somewhere that it wasn't but that was some time ago.

Man....you lucked out finding Progressives already in there! :shock: :music2:


I just have to think about all those times I put air in the forks thinking I needed to put it in there. :shock:

Yes 1 long springs is Progressives.

No air needed with them.

I run atf for fluid.
Tried 20 wt. Was too harsh.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm getting rid of the air shocks on my '81. Looks like I can get some short but heavy duty rear coilover shocks for the rear courtesy of HD, but I didn't know what to do about the front end. So just to make sure I have this right, I can throw progressive one piece springs in the front end, run with ATF, and I should have a firm ride. Excellent. Thanks guys.
