I took apart the starter out of my gl1100. Now I need some advise on how the steel plates go back in. The plates are held on by the outside screws . I noticed these plates have a little indention on one end. Does this indention go toward the brushes or away from the brushes?

Also I have a gasket from the kit. It fits where the ring of teeth but not sure if that is where it goes.

Any help or a diagram would be helpful.
Thank You in advance.

The 4 plates that hold the inside coil in place. The 4 screws on the outside of the starter hold these plates in place. They are about 3 inches long and about 1/2 inch wide. The armeture fits inswide these 4 plates.

I was afraid you were going to say that.

I've never had those out so don't know for certain but I'll try to help.

Aren't those coils soldered together so the coils will only go in one way?
I believe by matching the coils up with the battery post hole.

The coil I have in. The plates are what I do not know which way they go on. A friend took them out and he is not here to put them back in. I tried one way but it wont spin when current is applied. so I athink they are in the wrong way. asking before I tear it apart again.

I have not torn it back apart yet. If I do then I will pic it. These plates are inside the starter which hold the coil in place. and to keep them in place the 4 bolts on the outside of the starter tightens them. Then the armeture slides in between the 4 plates.

plates are in correctly as the motor turns with out the gears on. I damaged the bearings on the spline end of the motor.
Thanks
I can't remember, isn't that a brass sleeve bearing on the end?
