Left hand presses down and sets alignment while the right turns the rachet handle.
 
If I remember correctly (been over 3 years and my 16 year old daughter did it anyway), we removed the fork from the tree, drained the oil, removed the allen bolt at the bottom and pulled them apart. Popped the snap ring, pulled the seal, drove a new seal in with a PVC pipe and put it back together. Added oil and installed back on the bike. I do remember it only took 15 minutes per side to do it!
