coming from in front, near the timing belt area too the front tire.... makes noises like a bearing going out,, and sometimes it will even make a high pitched shrill,,, this has been going on for quite some time and i guess i can't find it... I have checked for heat around the front axle,,, ? possibly the water pump,,, or two different things,,,.... Put on over 300 mi sunday aftn... (just didn't mention noises to the rider) Im almost hoping whatever it is would just break and get it overwith. maybe im gonna have to try to upload a video of it.

So now I'm confused. Is the problem in the front or the rear? Because the original post suggests it's the front while your most recent post says the problem is in the rear on the final drive?

Front or back, :Doh2:

Does the problem happen when just the motor is running? Does the problem happen just when the bike is being ridden? Does it occure only when backing up? I need more data. A video would be stellar at This point

Bronko,, with ya'lls help I've learned I have two diff. issues... I've tried to upload a very short video,, idk why but it doesn't seem to work. thanx

Ah, so there is more than one problem. The easiest way to post a video is to upload it to youtube then load the link into into the forum. If you cannot get that done, just email the video to Dan via the PM chat and he will load it up for you and get it posted. A video is gonna be really helpful to get you the help you need. We will get you sorted bruv.

yes close gerry i think ....its the tracking itself ...need to pit the bike on center stand ...or back tire off ground ......go to the right side or the swing arm pivot or the one for wrench loosening and loosen this ...now stress relieved the other side can be loosen ...it sounds like the drive shaft is misaligned ...its supposed to be bottom out on drive side or shaft side 1200 and 1100 pivots are a bit different if they get used on wrong bike it can mess tracking up ..dont ride it like this till it is lined up good ...it can be fix with even it pins are wrong or problem somwhare else that need swing to be adjusted a bit

Mine makes that same noise but maybe not as loud. Seems to come from the final drive, not the U Joint.
I would as a first check is align the final drive and wheel. There is a proper sequence which I can't remember at the moment.

It sounds to me like the tire is rubbing the plastic inner fender. If the tab is out of the slot behind the battery tray, or at the rear of the gas tank, or if the plastic is cracked or warped, this will happen. The drive shaft rotates about 3 times every wheel rotation, and the noise seems to happen once per wheel rotation.

right,, wiped some of that dust on a papertowel,, dark gray in color,, possible rubber type odor,,, idk,,, think if it was some kind of road dust it would have a grit to it ,, that it doesn't seem toooo ,,, later

Replaced the belt tensioner,, thats not it,,, it's the right front brake,, (controlled by the rear brake) the inside of the disc is torn up some from the outside down about 3/8 of an inch,, the caliper seems to be working correctly,, it had a very tiny tiny stone in it ,, I thought that might be something to do with it but nooo.... originally i guess i knew i had noises coming from there ,, I had put a lil WD40 with silicone on some of it,, to quiet things,, had probly used oil on the caliper before that ... about all i know to do is to spray brake clean on everything now... till i have to get the disc turned,,... whatever i have on the back of the pads (which have almost no wear) is black,, and sticky stuff... idk,, sucks to ride it ,, too many crazy noises from it. Basically everything is correct,, it's just misbehaven

This is a very good example of what information should be given when asking for this kind of help:
-When do you hear the noise - only when the bike is moving, anytime the engine is running, only during acceleration, cornering, or braking...
-When did the noise start - gradually over time, after work was performed, or suddenly, for no known reason?
-If a video can't be posted, describe the sound. Does it change with engine RPM? Does it change with bike speed? High or low pitch? Squeak, squeal, growl, rumble, click, grind, whine...

The video of you turning the rear wheel instantly changed my opinion from a u-joint or final drive issue to a tire rubbing issue. Check the wheel for any side-to-side movement. The hubs on the '83s, and some '84s are known to stretch, causing play. My '83 was so bad, it destroyed the splines on the wheel flange and the final drive ring gear.

took the pads out,, cleaned,, cleaned, put a lil antisieze on the rods that hold the pads,, much much better,, think i might run it tonite :whip:
