I've got an old but (previously) reliable GL1100, been working good for me after I bought it a couple years ago.. did have some kinda bad primary chain noise at idle but I was told that was not a big issue. Last fall I went to start it up and it started cranking, then kinda made a 'chunk' sound and has kinda locked down the engine.

So, I'm getting ready to start taking things apart.. looking for advice, and maybe therapy. I also have to replace the stator on my gl650.

Howdy and welcome to CGW. Could be any number of reasons for it do that. Follow Joe's advice first to eliminate doing any further damage to the engine, just don't force it to rotate if you feel resistance.

Greetings from the Sunshine State.

Live long and prosper. God bless you.

Welcome to the site from New Jersey! :clapping:

Agree that with the primary chain knock/slap your carbs were in need of work and most likely leaked down into the cylinders causing hydrolock. (Always go for the simple things first!)

thanks for all the welcomes.. yah.. I'm gonna be careful. I don't think it's hydro locked, was 'cranking'.. starting to sputter, just starting up when went 'erk' and stopped.. no response from starter after that.

I was going to pull the timing belt covers, see if I could 'gently' turn things with a rachet on the cam bolts.

it's possible my timing belts were loose or something and slipped cogs.. (don't know anything about the bike except that it has about 70K on it).

I bought this for a $1300 a couple years ago, fixed a few small things, and had been riding happily (with it kinda rattling away) for the past couple of summers - probably about 1K miles each year..

if turning 'gently' on the cam bolts doesn't tell me anything, I will understand there is a 'plug' I can remove and turn the crank manally?

how hard is this going to be if it's the starter chain or (gasp) primary chain... engine out, I assume ?

your taking timing covers off is good and sould do that ...but when that's done and the p;ugs are out you can use the crank bolt to turn motor...that's the best place period ....if its been rattleing some there more things on the table here ....if it will not move easy from crank bolt ....lets see what that gets you

If you have the timing covers off use the crank bolt to turn the engine over. You could use the back wheel with the bike in gear to also turn the motor over manually, just make sure that the spark plugs are removed.
