If you can't handle talking about Harleys get out of this thread now...pissy remarks will be deleted.

I was listening to the radio on the way to work this morning, and an ad for the local Harley shop came on. They were talking about this test drive weekend which I think I'll attend to try out a big Harley dresser. Anyway, a claim that the majority of Harleys models get over 54 miles to the gallon was made before the commercial ended. Is this possible? I honestly don't know. Our GoldWings seem to get around 30-35 mpg. Is a V-Twin that much more fuel efficient? Isn't CC displacement/fuel usage basically the same regardless of brand?

Please lets try to keep this "on topic only."

Fuel injection makes a major difference. No fuel trickling down the manifold runners when the engine is cold, injector points at the back of the intake valve most of the time, precise metering. Yea, and they turn slower so yea, I'd say that claim isn't far off.

Well I have very little interest really in an over priced Harley so I have never talked to anyone or visited any Harley forums to read what owners report as fuel mileage but yeah, fuel injection helps a lot and so does aerodynamics.
Maybe the Harleys have better air flow?
As for lower rpm's that helps also. My V8 Suburban turns under 2k rpms at 70 in 5th gear and gets a true 21 mpg.
Most 1100's get over 40 mpg, something is up with yours ~O~.

Got a link to the HD commercial?

It was a radio ad for Henderson Harley Davidson. I'll check their site to see if it's there. I have no idea what my mileage is Dan, I don't seem to have to stop for gas very often and I ride 30 min one-way to work every day. I wonder if the EFI 1200 had much improved mpg over the carbed model. Lastly, I'm not interested in a Harley, you all know I could never afford one if I did. Just want to ride one once.

Half the cylinders and roughly half the rpm. Seems possible. I can't recall ever checking mileage on my virago.

I would believe 50 something from the factory. Heck, my old 73 Bonneville used to get mid 50s.

Heh Heh !!! Dan I think it's all in his wrist :whip: :whip: :whip: :Egyptian: :Egyptian: :Egyptian:

brand new fuel injected bike I believe mileage could be in the 50s. That would be a blast to ride a new Harley let us know how you like it.
I'm like Will Rogers I never meet a bike I didn't like. :good:

Carefull dan, thats sounds a little pissy to me. :smilie_happy:

The local Hardy dealers around here are also advertising a Test Drive week, but they are only claiming 42mpg. Actually, I think they say "Over 42 mpg" in the add, but still. My 'Wing will get 42+ at 65mph, and it drops down exponentially as the rpms go up. At 75 mph, I'm getting around 38mpg.

It's easy to get 50+ mpg when yer sittin on the side of the road most of the time..... :smilie_happy:  :smilie_happy:

Yeah it kind of does doesn't it :hihihi:

I have to admit though I really do like the Harley's but more with pipes as they come off the floor.
It's all the HD's in L.A that have been modified to be as loud and I swear LOUDER than straight pipes that irritate me and give bikers a bad image. If I were to ever get one I'd either leave it stock or just a tad louder than stock.

My buddy in Seattle has a fully dressed Harley (2010) with all of the do-dads, fuel injection, some sort of computer controlled timing etc... At idle, it drops down to one cylinder (which shakes pretty hard at stop lights) but on the highway it smooths right out real nice (and powerful). His bike averages 49 MPG between driving around Seattle and then out to Bainbridge island (By ferry for you wise guys that want to say the bike can't float). It was nice on the road, but I could not handle the vibration at stop lights!

A feller that used to werk at the shop rode a newer Hardly....don't know what model it was, but he claimed he got right around 50mpg IF he rode nice. I'm pretty sure he burned 1/2 gallon just firing it up and wingin the throttle 15 times every time he left the shop! :smilie_happy:

Harley Davidson's are great motorcycles, I have heard of many of them that get 50 highway..
