Can someone tell me if the header and exhaust pipes are welded together or do they separate? If they separate how are they connected together? I looked at the parts diagram at the site that Dan posted yesterday and it shows one piece connected together but I also have seen references to people changing mufflers so I always assumed they could be separated without major welding work. I have an exhaust leak which I can hear but not feel right at my left foot which is where I believe the header and exhaust connect. Aside from the noise if I have a smokey start which occurs if I flood the motor a cloud of blue smoke will emerg from that area. I have tried to feel around under there before the pipe gets hot and I cannot feel any exhaust leak but it's there. I also cannot see any holes or such but it is difficult to see all around the pipe with it on the bike. I will have to at some point take the mufflers off to have a better look. If they are welded together I guess I'll have to take it to a shop to fix the weld, but it they separate maybe it's something I can fix up and get back on the bike the same day? I'm enjoying my daily rides so much at this point I hate to tear it apart right now as it really doesn't both me that much, but at some point I would like to get the leak fixed. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The earlier 1000 had separate header pipes and mufflers but the 1100 are all welded one piece.

It has been mentioned the 1100 muffs can be cut open and cut off to reveal headers similar to a 1000 but doing that would ruin the muffs you have, you'd have to adapt other muffs, Harley slipons are popular.

Yours can be welded as a repair. I've done it.

Thanks for the replies. The cross over pipe is gone on my system. At some point a PO cut the pipe off, left about a 1" stump on both mufflers and filled the holes with muffler cement. I know that sounds terrible, but otherwise these mufflers are practically rust free so I can understand why he tried this fix. I originally though the leak must be at the crossover hole/patch but for the life of me I cannot detect any blow by at these two places. It still seems to be at the junction of the header and muffler. I'll go ahead and pull the pipe next week and have a closer look. Thanks for the info.
