That rectangular rubber looks like the seal for that screen below the right side head.

Yeah Ron..that's the seal for the oil pump screen on the lower right of the engine.

Good to hear about the cam seals...the one on the head I have apart still fits snug on the cam. I guess I'll spread a small amount of Permatex Aviation Sealer around the outer edges before putting them back in place. The exhaust valve seals were hard as rocks, of course, and there was a minor amount of play between the exhaust valves and the guides, but not enough to cause a problem. I was surprised that the carbon on the valves cleaned up easily on the wire wheel of my small(1/2hp) bench grinder. I figured I would have to get the big boy(1hp) out, but the little one got the stuff off just fine. Still need to clean the tops of the pistons, and scrape gaskets, but....it's gettin there.
Thanks for all the help and info....youse guys rock! :clapping:

No poop on the seals now...they were void of any added sealant. I just figured now that they have been disturbed, it might be best to schmere a wee bit of sealer on the outsides, where they seal against the head/cam cover.
Got the left head in the washer now, getting cleaned. Should be able to re-assemble it tonite, then do the same to the right head tomorry. Then maybe get the heads back on this weekend, and start ripping the front off. The fun never ends, does it? :builder: :headscratch:

Don't know if the metal pumps are aftermarket or a Honda OEM upgrade, it is what Honda sends with Honda packaging.

From what I see the metal pumps are for the 1200's and all the 1100's I have always came with the other "bakelite" type.
Last winter one of my scrappers would not push water so I took the pump off and like yours it had slight play I was surprised how little it takes to make a pump unusable.

:Egyptian: My Jen-you-wine Mother Honda head gaskets got here today! :yahoo:
Got the right side head torn down, valves out and stuff, ready to put in the washer tomorrow. Decided to go ahead tonite and lap at least one of the valves on the left head, just to see how it would turn out, and.... :yahoo:  looks really nice! SO...I'll get at least the left head assembled tomorrow evening, valves lapped, new seals, and ready to install back on the engine. I still needs to get the pistons cleaned up some, but that won't take too long. I should be able to get the heads bolted back on this weekend, and then start on the water pump.

Quick question tho...I backed the valve adjusters all the way off before I took the timing belts loose. Even so, the rockers will still touch the valves, and put pressure on the cam. Am that normal for these things? I figured backing the adjusters off would allow the cam to spin pretty freely, without touching the valves, but mine ain't doin that. :headscratch:

While my does does have some play, the bike has never had a cooling issue until the head gasket took a poop. Even then, I believe the issue had more to do with loosing the coolant than the pump not pumping. It dint start running hotter than normal until I had run about 30 miles. By then there was very little coolant left in the reservoir. :thanks:

Since I'm here...I wanted to let everyone know where I got the head gaskets. It's an ebay seller, 100% pos Feedback Score Of 8641. Super nice guy, as far as my deal went. We emailed back/forth several time to make sure I was getting what I wanted.
Anyway, here's the link to the gaskets. The name is minitrail69. Got lots of OE stuff for smaller Hondas mostly, but he do have OE Goldwing stuff, too. Don't know how competitive the prices are, but he do have free shippin! :eek:k:

What i noticed mine was doing is at low speeds the water was relatively still (some pumping but not enough) at higher revs you can see the water start moving. I was just playing around on the bench and did not actually take it on the road so I am not sure if I would have noticed it had I not been using the clear hose. The previous owner did not make mention of it overheating BUT it always amazes me how a bike in PERFECT running condition changes so drastically when you get it home.

When I did the same for the '81 heads, I had the same issue.......they did not completely back off, but very little pressure on the valves during rotation of the cam shaft.

Otay..latest update:

Got both heads assembled today. Lapped all the valves, installed new seals, and they are ready to bolt back onto the engine. I gotta get the gaskets scraped off the block tomorrow, and hopefully get the heads bolted back on, and the timing belts installed. I was shooting for a completion date of Christmas, but...I might have it done by Thanksgiving!! :Egyptian: :smilie_happy:

Here's some mo pics...just click on any of them for the larger pics.

Thanx Joe! I actually read the service manual this time... :read: Had I not, I would have never even noticed the difference.
:smilie_happy:

Here's some new pics from today. I got the left side head on....then had to take it back off because I forgot that dam little oil restrictor... :Doh2: I hadn't torqued the bolts yet, so I was otay on the gasket. Hard to determine which way that little sombeech fits, too. None of the manuals have a decent pic of it, and I forgot which way it came out. Finally figured out that the end with the orifice holes in it goes into the engine block. :headscratch:
As always...clicking on the image will open the larger image. :good:

Well...back to werk! :builder:

Ya..no doubt. I wonder if the pistons wouldn't actually hit the gasket at TDC? These pistons are almost at a "0" deck height, meaning they are flush, are almost flush with the top of the block @TDC.(I was gunna check, but I forgot.) Seems like the pistons would crush the aftermarket gasket to me since the bore size is soo much smaller....Idano...sure ain't worth a chance. There was also one of the round coolant transfer holes that was off a bit, too. May not be enough to cause a problem, but I ain't gunna find out on MINE.
Now we know for SURE, eh? The OE gaskets seems to have more inner support, too. OE for head gaskets guys...no further discussion...EVER! :ahem:

So far today, I have installed BOTH heads now. The carbs are bolted back up, the fuel pump, and water crossover tube. What a PAIN getting the o-rings/housings back on that dang thing! :Awe:
Anyway, it's time for a break, then I'll hafta git back out there and get the timing belts on and timed, and then set the valves. Not really looking forward to all that, but I gotta get it done. I was hoping to get the front cover off for the water pump today, but that ain't gunna happen. The heat, and humidity is killin me....that, and sitting on a 14" high stool! My back is gunna remind me of that tomorrow.... :Doh2:

At the very least, I'm learning a LOT of stuff about my Goldwing...some of it is what NOT to do, some of it correct, but learnin none the same. Sure ain't nuttin like a small block Chebby, that's fer sher! :smilie_happy:

They came in the full engine gasket set I bought when I did the stator. Ebay, of course. I don't think there was a brand name on the package, but there was an ISO seal. I'll get a pic of that and post it later. The complete set was definitely cheaper than buying OE gaskets one at a time, but remember, all I was looking for at the time was the gaskets to do the stator swap....intake o-rings, exhaust dognuts, etc. Wasn't planning on having to use the head gaskets anyway at the time. Not planning on using them at all, now!
