I am now officially a new member after cruising the forums for loads of great advice. I am about to tackle the head gaskets on my 77 GL and look forward to some technical and moral support.

Welcome to our world. I too am curious about those pipes. What handle bars are you using? Looks good to me.

Thanks everyone! I will take my time and hope to avoid any major catastrophes.

The pipes are the aftermarket slip-ons that came on the bike (see pic below)...they were way toooo long and after a few cold ones I decided to bust out the sawzall and hacked 'em off. The result was straight pipes into 4" megaphones and a deep throaty growl that sounded like an offshore boat chewing on the remains of a Harley. I wrapped the headers and pipes in black exhaust wrap - I have since shortened them another 5" to make allow for easy access to the rear wheel and driveline. I can now use a rear wheel stand and the exhaust note it much more pleasing...higher pitched and angry as hell sounding. I will post a video after the gasket job when she isn't smoking like a wet strawpile.

The bars came off some donor in the Sportwheels boneyard (pic also below)...6 acres to play in.

Look forward to picking your brains and expertise,
Cheers,
Chris
