I do not even remember joining this forum, but apparently I did.I am looking into building naked wings.I have so many basket cases and full running bikes available, I do not know where to begin.I am 66, soon 67.I do not like the weight of the full dressed version nor do I tour anyway.Usually 50 miles is as far as i ride.On another site there is information, but what are the pros and cons of the 1000,1100,1200 versions? I have owned an 88 and 2 96 wings.I have always wanted a 4 cylinder classic wing. Many of the bikes I have found are running but have the heavy bulky and unaatractive vetter fairings. It looks as though if a vetter was removed the headlight might be useable.Whereas the fully faired versions one would need signal lights, a headlight, headlight mounting bracket, etc.I owned a 98 valkyrie, great bike, but too tempting to twist the throttle. My first tank of gas with that bike i only made it 99 miles before it ran out of gas.I have too many questions for one forum.Saunders pages help, the naked wing site helps, but this site looks like home.

Well, the 1200 has more torque than the other motors and the hydraulic lifters make for easier maintenance. Add to that the fact that tire sizes and options are more plentiful for the 1200 sizes.

I have a bike (1200 Standard) in my garage right now that once had a Vetter fairing on it and the PO took the fairing off of it and rather than finding the original headlight and turn signals, he mounted some aftermarket turn signals and just used the Vetter headlight bucket.

No matter which model, when they are put on a diet, they become pretty responsive to the throttle and you still get the added comfort that a GoldWing provides.

All 4 cyl models are great in their own way.
1200 has the best gear ratios for highway and touring and runs the smoothest and quietest.
75-76 1000 is probably the fastest of all of them, but a naked 1200 does pretty darn good too, same with the 1100's. 80-81 1100 naked is very fast with its lower gearing.
For local running around you can't go wrong with any of them.

Welcome to the site from New Jersey! :clapping:

My '82 1100 had a Vetter faring and it was a very useful item! But I liked the more open look of a Standard which my bike was originally. However, I take a lot of long trips and still needed bags so I tried to do the best of both worlds! I went from this:

to this:

and now this:

I can tell you that with the faring and bags off, she is one nimble bike!!

fyi, one magazine article i read years ago said the original naked 75 goldwing is as fast as the new 1800 wing.I would imagine in the 1800 valkyrie form that wouldn't be the case.I appreciate the information. So it looks like the 1200 is what to look for.I definitely want to be able to remove the trunk and bags. The plexistar 3 windshield is great, i owned one once.So I guess I will narrow my search to the 1200.The whole valve adjustment thing is a big deal to me. :Egyptian:

Be aware that finding a 1200 faux tank that isn't fitted to a fairing is tough to do. The last one I saw on ebay went for north of $125

If you want a non fairing version 84 was the last year for them and it was also the first year for the 1200. Later models can be modified to eliminate the fairing.

Welcome back to the asylum, :hi: the 84 standard was the zenith of the four's, in my opinion. Had two 1100's & they were also nice bikes, :salute: but the 1200 standard gets my vote. :good: The faired ones are very nice as well for colder & wet weather. :whistling:

That's what the Vetter fairing is for... easy on and off. Now if I only had the time to work on modifying an 1100 mount to fit a 1200 frame.

Hey, from Louisiana. My pick is now, and always has been the 1100, easiest of all to work on......Take all the stuff off and They will skat.

That's the great thing about M B S, why change the bike to ride, :nea: just change bikes. :yahoo:

I loved the look on my wife's face when I told her I might start riding naked. She did say my birthday suit needs ironing before I do that.

The sarcasm rubs off on them eventually, leaving us looking, & listening to ourselves. :smilie_happy:
