Hello to everyone just purchased a 1977 GL1000 gold wing with 23000 miles on her but could not get her to run. After removing and cleaning the carbs and checking the compression found #1 cylinder with very low compression. Oh well purchased for a project. :head bang:
 
Welcome to the forums.

By low compression what numbers are you getting?
I ask because I have an 81 engine that sat for years. Compression was 90 lbs but came up slowly to 165 after putting on about 500 miles. The rings needed to seat which is very common for these engines after sitting.
 
Welcome aboard. I wouldn't worry about compression until it's been run a while. It's best to check it with the motor warmed anyway.
 
155 on cylinders 2,3,4 and 35 on cylinder 1. I puts little oilin the cylinder and compression pumps right up to 155. Lots of smoking and I cannot keep it running long enough to warm up.

Hmm yeah, doesn't sound too good but ya just never can tell.
When mine was low, putting oil in like that made the compression shoot up also.
 
Could you keep yours running? I pulled the carbs three times and cleaned them. Cleaned and flushed the fuel tank and replaced the fuel filter and lines. Finally checked the compression and found the cylinder 1 with low compression. I have the motor ready to come out of the frame, hopefully this weekend will get time to tear into the motor and investigate. I wanted to reprint the frame and motor anyway, this will just make it easier

Hope it's not too bad, but low comp on one cylinder that comes up wet, ain't lookin good.... :crying:
 
Thank you all for the great welcome. I've owned motorcycles since I was 13 years old and got my motorcycle license since I was 17. I own a couple of motorcycles and was looking for a good winter project, guess I found it. :)
 
The odd thing is 35 in just the one cylinder, others are fine.
I bet your going to find a bad valve because the cylinders usually wear in sync. Hopefully not a corroded cylinder but just by chance, have you checked the valve adjustments? Could be that one is too tight causing it to stay open and lower the compression.
 
the whole idea that it went from 35 to 155 with just some oil ...makes me think it aint that bad ...make sure to just keep turning it over with some lube in the clylinders and plugs out it may just seat itself with the starter motor spinning ...not much load on it with the plugs out ....

Ya that does sound like crud on the valve face or on the stem either way pour oil in it leave the other three plugs out and spin the motor
 
Just wanted to mention also that you say there's alot of smoke but if you had or someone before you had dumped oil in any one of the cylinders it will take a good 45 minutes AFTER it's warmed up to burn all the oil out of the exhaust.
