I need some info...... I ride a 1980 GL1100 Interstate.... Thought the battery went bad, so put new battery in, trickle charged in 24 hours. Rode the bike about 2 hours and it wouldn't start.. Read on a web site about the stator plug in buy the battery, it was not great looking , so I cut it out and wired direct... Recharged the battery, checked the battery voltage. It checked 12.8 . Started bike and checked at 2500 rpm's it checked 13.6... I thought problem was fixed... Rode the bike for a about a hour and checked battery again. Checked 11.3 and running 11.3.... Charged battery again and checked got 12.7 and running 13.8.... So my question is WHAT IS THE PROBLEM.... ????????? Am going to Colorado over July 4th weekend,,, if I can get bike charging...... Please help............. THANK YOU in advance....

if the wires ...the tree yellow ones have contact with another yellow wire ...that means its shorted and will not put out power .....the stator is three phase ...each wire is a phase they can not touch each other ...if you a voltage tester there sould be contiueity test possition ...any readinding of continueity is bad ...you dont want any reading at all

Joedrum has it backward, there should be continuity between the yellow wires but NO continuity to ground on any wire.

I would check all your other connections as well particularly at the regulator, those same 3 wires meet there and can overheat.

13.8 isn't enough to maintain the battery on these bikes with ignition, the lighting and cooling fan.
It needs to be getting a full 14.5.
You may have a slightly weak battery also.

I would do those checks as outlined above. Those manual pages are Here in the gallery.
Let us know what you find.

The most important check for stator health is check each yellow wire to ground. If you have continuity that field of the stator is bad. If all wires read open. Most likely the issue is in the regulator/rectifier or the connections to it.

Front bolts are up front by the neck of the frame and under the tank. With a lot of patience some have gotten them out just removing the fairing lowers. Rear two bolts are under the front of the seat.

Check and clean all of your ground wire connections first especially at the frame, there are also two ground wires that come out of the rectifier regulator, check those too.. clean the connections good.. :Egyptian: :salute: Good luck, hope ya get it fixed up and you're riding soon..

Thank you all for your info..... After checking the yellow stator wires to ground, I found them shorted,, so no trip to Colorado over the 4th.... Again,, Thanks...
