Brand new to this forum, I'm doing some research on timing belt repalcement. Found some good stuff on 1000's and 1200's but not specifically for 1100's. I have a fair amount of mechanical skill so I'll probably go with what I've got, unless I find something here. My wing is an '83 I with 46,000 and as far as I know neither of the previous owners had it done or did it themselves. I did lots of suspension work last year and a little bit of riding until I discovered the info on timing belts. Wish me luck.

Welcome, super easy, doing it as compared to reading about it are two different things. If it ran then just line up the #1 TDC mark in the little timing hole, both front covers off(should be off already to use front crank bolt to line up timing mark) Then check that the are both on the marks(facing outwards) can be double checked by looking to see both pulleys marked "UP" are in the up position.
Remove belts install new ones, fuel pump side has to be re adjusted by turning a little so there is no spring load on pulley(you will notice the head pulley move a little when you remove the old belt), Tighten all bolts..once that is done turn the motor a few revolutions to TDC again and check that marks all line up, turn it as much as you like to be absolutely sure there is no interference and all marks line up.
Good luck.
PS I use a custom cut piece of cardboard to protect radiator fins from damage during cover removal and crank turning. It`s tight but you can do it.

Thanks. I will probably pull the radiator as I plan on flushing and since the cap, stat, and hoses are suspect, I plan to replace them all at the same time

If its a standard GL should be easy to pull, on my dressed 80 I couldn't pull the radiator away from the top two bolts so I just pushed out the bottom enough to get at it.

welcome to classic make sure you look at the different pulley marks honda decided needed to put there for nothing but to confuse people and ruin motors .. on the forum page there is a forum there that goes right to it ... we try to get the best belt issues out front ..

For sure Joe, I alway suggest to look for the "UP" printed on the pulleys, cant miss the UP.

Welcome from Southern California! It's an easy job. Patience and triple-checking everything are the most important steps. Enjoy that '83...we'd love to see it!!

Welcome to CGW. Them belts is not a bad job once you know what you are doin. Just take your time and rotate everything by hand to be sure there is not binding or any valves smackin pistons and you will be ok. If you have seen how to do it on a 1200 or 1000 its the same show for a 1100. I also think you are making the right move pulling the radiator as I believe it makes the job so much easier, especially if its your first time.
