Yea, the grime on the inside really needs to come out with a soda blaster. As far as just basic cleaning and degreasing I think it works really well for smaller parts.
 
I think CLR would have worked the best... I have had some parts that I have put in a small plastic container and just shook them with CLR and they come fairly good after a couple moments of shaking... I think I will try the velcro to the bottom of the tub and leave it on for a bit... the CLR is good for crud removal...

I agree CLR would be far better than detergent for that mess. Detergent is fine for grease but won't touch deposits like that. Is you're afraid to use CLR try white vinegar.
