I agree with you guys that turning off the petcock every time has to be automatic. Let me ask you this, maybe the poor running was not because it was too rich instead of starving for fuel? The cylinders were already full of gas and when I remembered to turn the petcock back on and the bike died, the battery went south, then it hydro locked? It happened almost immediately.

But it definitely was locked up. Soon as I pulled the plugs the bike turned over easily and gas shot out like out of a hose. Thank goodness it is running good and I don't have crooked rods. And Dave, I'm sorry you had to see this.

Also What happens sometimes is the oil on tha cylinder walls is washed off to the point its to much friction to crank. Allso worth mention is tha ethanol alcohol in tha gas these days reeks havoc with needle valves and other rubber fuel system parts. I welded a 2" extension on my side stand. Im too long of tooth fer center stands

all this being said about fuel dumping in motor is a discount to some degree ...but in essence all this comes from huge advantages of a boxer motor that water cooled and if treated right can last super long time .....on my bike ive made huge changes to lessen some of the sub par stock set ups ...carbs were one ....running the motor much cooler than stock set up is one ..... c5 ignition was huge part of build.....getting the most reliability and power to me makes these oldwing bikes road eaters .....long trips are handled with confidence ....

had a 79 wing with stock carbs for yrs ...had all kinds of carb trouble and ignition issues took a couple yrs to figure it all out ....once running good with atf being used ...bike ran great from then on and didn't leak gas in motor...many yrs later i took motor out for no reason at all except to put a 1200 motor in it ...and when i open carbs up for a looksie ....they were cleaner than the day i put them on clean ...this had to be at least 5 yrs later ....atf is stock oldwings best friend along with lower running temperature it seems to me ....

I'll get me a baby bottle and carry it around with a bit of ATF in it. Cheaper than a lot of stuff you could add to the gas too.

Hey when you say ATF do you mean automatic transmission fluid? How does that work?
Yes! I use 6-8 oz to a full tank of gas. It acts as a detergent and also adds a certain amount of lubricity to the gasoline. Too much though, and you might see some white smoke at start up. It clears pretty quick.
