Idler pulley rebuild or buy new?

I found the actual pulley is in a different spot on the back plate comparing the 84 1200 idler against an 1100 idler.
I made a thread not long ago showing the differences when putting an 1100 idler on this 84 1200.
Now that I had the pulley off both plates it was easy to see this one on top the other.
I'll post that in the other thread and what problems this created.

As for your Ipad.
Have you tried a couple more pic uploads? Maybe in the same thread you were having trouble with before?
Are you still getting logged out or is this problem fixed?

Dan, I keep getting booted back to the login page whenever I try to upload a pic??? I replaced the 1200 with 1000 pulleys. No more wobble. I have a pic of the back of a 1200 idler compared to a 1000. The 1200 just looks like it has three more holes in it.

Every time I try and follow your QuickTime/mov links I get booted off the site with my iPad and it seems to happen when I go back to post on the same forum again and again. I was curiouse if you have done the new software upgrade os7.1.2 as I have been holding off to see what everyone has to say?

This is the final result.
I'm calling this left idler done.

How I got there was using one of these bolts, 3/8"x1-1/2":

This is how that bolt sat on the plate:

The hole is already tapered but I marked the outer diameter of the bolt head then using a carbide Dremel tip I tapered the plate hole more so the bolt head sat down further.
Yes I could have used a countersink bit (which I don't have) but I'm not willing to spend $30+ for one.

After that, put it all together, crank the bolt down tight, then belt sanded the head flat.

It spins true and the belt runs centered on the cam pulley.

I don't know what was causing it to make the cam pulley wobble like it was for Eric other than if there is a bolt head protruding from the back of the plate, the plate will not tighten down flat which 'cocks' the idler pulley at a slight angle and the belt will actually 'walk forward' some on the cam pulley.

All looks good Dan and I prefer your high tensile bolt over the carriage bolt. I can't view the video as it is coming up private :(

I'm glad you approve Tony, sheesh.
I didn't do it this way because of any assumed weakness in that carriage bolt. I did it this way because it had to be done. I see no other way.
The bolt head has to be flush.

And I'll tell ya what, this bolt grinds just as easy as the carriage bolt.

Nothing like getting approval from the other side of the world :smilie_happy:

I tried the video again and it still says private and logs me out. It seems like any video that has a glitch logs me out of your site, hope that helps.

:good: Nice work Dan !!!
+1 and video :good:

:0fftopic:

Eric's video shows the cam pulley to be wobbly....not the belt....the pulley itself is wobblin. Might have a bugger on the backside of it that won't let it sit flat on the cam. The bolt seems to be runnin straight, and the belt is runnin straight, too. Either the pulley is not seated flat, or...the pulley is bent...

1100 plate on the bottom, 84 1200 plate on the top.

The difference in the center hole position of the 1100 idler means when it's installed the belt is too tight because the bolt in the slotted hole is at the end of it's travel.

Difference in the 1200:

Basically what I'm trying to say here is the idler pulleys are not all the same. They could even be model specific so check the fit carefully when replacing them with anything new or used.

Thanks Dan.. I was making a quick visual comparison and those are real slight with possible major consequences.. I appreciate the enlightenment..

Good pics, Dan. So sandiegobrass was correct in saying the 1000-1100 and the 1200-1500 were different. Same bearing replacements, but different brackets.

I'd love to listen in at an engineer's meeting when they discuss the need to change something like this. Is it really a necessary change, or planned obsolescence...

Thanks, Dan - it's good to know these kinds of differences!
