A diode can be tested with a battery and test light bulb.
Your looking for the light to come on in only one direction of hookup, think in terms of flow of water through a check valve.
Or pick up a cheapie meter from the hardware store.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but mine does not act that way - the panel light on my bike indicates a problem with the tail light (or turn signal) it comes on when the lights are out or shorted
