My gl1000 smells like gas especially at start up and during riding. When i get home i smell gas on my clothes. Torso. Hands. Someone mentioned a faulty cap or fuel sender oring. I believe the cap is ill fitting. So i will try to replace that first before going into floats. Are there aftermarket caps or should i go honda? If i recall correctly i changed the oring on the fuel sender when i derusted and fixed it.

P.s. I jut made junior member. Right on.

after a run take out the air cleaner filter and with a flashlight look down into the plenum for gas or fuel residue, should be clean and dry with no wet fuel or residue.
You can also start it looking down and see if there is any gas pooling/leaking, this allows a little extra pressure from the pump to help expose small leaks.
Seems to me the same complaint about clothes smelling and fuel smell was posted a few months ago, cant remember if or how it was solved.
By the way, check the cap first, that sits right under you and would envelop you while sitting on the bike, there is a one way hole on the cap, should let air in but not out.

Well these are the two culprates so far. The gas cap itself is wobbly and the seal is broken as you can see in the pic. My luck has it, the cap is the first item i cAnt find oem or aftermarket. Luckily i found a new oem seal on ebay ($8 w shipping) and they MAY have one at honda of hollywood for $1. So if may have double.
The second offender is the hose on the second fuel filter that surely I didnt put on. It was my mechaic and just handlng the hose will stink up my hand. It slides a lot which means its def emmiting fumes from there. I will clamp it up or get new hoses.

If you can rig up some tubing to test the check valve in the cap it would be a deciding factor wether you buy just a seal or a whole cap, should be able to suck in but not out.
Get yourself some tygon hose if you want clear, dont even need clamps with tygon but they help, regular fuel line is OK but not the best for alcohol we have in our fuel.

The seal will definitely improve your gas cap issue. If the vent is not up to scratch you can always drill a small hole through the cap to allow air in, I just wouldn't overfill the tank otherwise it will leak out of your new vent hole.

I'm gonna step out on a limb here and say that I am under the opinion that clear hose on the output of the fuel pump is not rated for gasoline!

Lol. Yes Gerry I believe youre right. It has been replaced with a fuel hose. And i didnt place that clear hose there.

Yes. Ive clampped everything up. Significant improvement i believe. Still need to wait for cap seal to come in. Have a nice Thursday everyone.

P.s. Im also turning the petcock to off when i shut down bike. Not sure if it helps from over flowong the bowls but i read it somewhere.

Yep! You should always turn the petcock off when not running.

I feel a new topic coming on ....
file.php
Oil?..Wipe it down clean and ride a few miles, look real close again and see where it is coming from. turbulence and gravity causes oil to travel while riding.

 If that is FUEL, the pump is gunna need a rebuild, and it's possible the crankcase will have mucho fuel in it. I wouldn't be running it if it is fuel.....
If it's engine oil, it prolly only needs an o-ring and a gasket on the fuel pump mount.

Is there an oring on the tach cable?..Had mine out I just don't remember.

Remove the oil fill cap and smell in there, be sure the case does not smell gassy.

That fuel pump is a pretty easy and cheap replacement. You can get one for an 1000 or an 1100 and it will work for you just fine.

PS. This seller is who I get ALL of my OEM Honda parts from. I just email him and tell him what I need. Great source for correct parts.
