My new old ford truck purchase.

Awhile ago I posted for advice about a truck purchase and thought I would show you what I found. It is a 1990 F150 4X4 w/ a 302 3 speed automatic,It has 103K miles and is pretty nice except some hood paint peeling. undercarriage clean, no oil leaks, rear gas tank does not work(electric fuel pump maybe) but it does have air conditioning which I think I`ll need in Oklahoma or Texas.
Paid $2500.
Thanks for the advice on the other trucks, just thought I would tell how the story ended.

Looks like a good truck, even if it does have a blue oval on it. At least it isn't too new.

Looks like an excellent choice! Great price too. Fixing the rear fuel pump isn't bad once the bed is off. The blue oval boys make good trucks.

Thanks Dan, Was getting weary shopping for one...Seem to find 2 kinds of used trucks, either beat up or super clean/restored..was perfect price and condition for me and my budget.

Thanks Steve, now need to get a motorcycle trailer, need to sell the diesel rabbit too so if you know of anyone who needs a fuel saver i`m selling one.

You can but it's a lot more work in my experience. If the straps are still in good shape I'd pull the bed instead. If the straps need replaced then I probably would pull the tank. It's a bear wrestling that tank back in place especially if it has any fuel in it.

Dan, they are in my picture album now, from a couple years ago but looks the same,took off the fog lights but still have them, raised the height up an inch and a half for better ride. maintained by me last 15 years would take it anywhere. it still needs some restoration but nothing major, mechanics are sound, take some inside pics tomorrow.

I've owned a lot of trucks and many Fords from 60's to current models and have some insight on their engines.

I have at one time or another had Ford trucks with: 223 inline 6 cyl
300 inline 6 cyl
302 V8
351 V8
390 V8
460 V8
3.0 litre V6
5.4 litre V8

The 302 depending on year is a popular small engine with good reliability, a huge afermarket, and it has decent power in stock form.
It should be capable enough for some light duty towing with an automatic but a manual tranny would be best for towing and mpg.
Consider servicing the automatic and adding a trans cooler for towing.
Because of the vintage of this truck and it's non OD automatic don't expect great power or mpg.
Congrats and as with any older machine, preventative maintenance is absolutely key to longevity,

Thanks for the insight Terry,I was underneath it checking thing and found an auto trans cooler in front of the radiator looks factory installed, least no couplers,all hard lines...will check the 3rd members, there is a 69 f250 with a 360 4 speed I looked at , I called the guy to let him know I found this truck and told him what it was and he wanted to trade his for this one..said he always wanted a 4X4 but I already had the paperwork started at the DMV... still it could happen, lets see..may have a 69 to show next.

Nice truck, dropping the tank is easy, just take care as you drop it with the wiring, if I remember correctly the connectors will be on the frame rail side, lower the tank just enough to get to the connectors, then lower it all the way down once the wiring it free. Make sure the tank is almost empty before doing so. Or if you have a lot of friends around, just lift the bed off, actually that is the easiest way.

Yep! I think 8 bolts to remove the bed. Disconnect the wiring at left rear corner. A guy on each rear corner to lift and slide back with a sawhorse to support it. Oh don't forget to remove the fill hoses from the gas tanks. I think it's even easier with the Fords because the bolts go down through the bed instead of up into it.
