Need some advice on leaking ignitors.

I believe the resistor is key to preventing too high current passing thru the igniters.
At least that seems to be the only difference between years.
Possibly coil resistance is different. I have 2 1983 sets here which are just about 3 ohms, like 2.6.

I`ll ride out for a visit when I can, need to either carry spare igniters or change out the coils. What`s really telling is only 13K on these ignitors and already going toast, I wonder how long the guys back in 80-81 rode before they failed.

Potted.

You might want to read the how to on the 1500 coil swap. Looks better than the Neon coils and needs no resistor. It is on another online Goldwing site.

Thats something to investigate,In the meantime going to add some kind of aluminum heat sink to these when I bolt them back in, maybe something sandwiched between the two like a big aluminum fender washer.

All I can say is beware not running a resistor.

How so Dan?...Still cooks the ignitors?

I can only add that I am running an '83 engine with '81 coils with no resistor, but automotive plug wires, also no resistor and mine runs like a champ. I might only be buying time but this has been my setup for as long as I have been ridng my bike except for when I had the '81 engine in.

That gives me hope, I was about to strip a selenium rectifier for its cooling fins and sandwich it between the 2 ignitors thinking it would wick some of the heat but I really dont want to wreck a rectifier, think I`ll just button it up today,
I have to wonder if it would keep them cooler and what benefits it may have, anything that gets hot enough to melt the potting really needs some kind of cooling...dont know, maybe I`ll still try it.

Anyone figure out what causes the putty to melt in the first place?
I`m sure it has something to do with why they added the ceramic resistor to the 82-83 models. The resistor takes the heat that the ignitor would have gotten.
I`m back together with no cooling fins, going to just ride it, maybe look for a spare set of igniters to carry with just in case.
I have a question, is the cracked coils I have heard of also in the 80-81`s or 82-83 or effects all 80-83`s?
Started thinking maybe the Honda fix of a resistor caused the coils to crack or maybe part of the hot ignitors on the 80-81`s.

my orig 1980 coils cracked and i used the 83 coils that came with the 83 engine i put in my bike BUT i disconnected the ballast resister and run them like my orig 80 coils with around 30,000 miles and no problems! BTW, i did re epoxy my orig spark units around 38,000 miles ago with jb weld and carry a set in the bags but never needed to use them! I beat up the old girl running 800 miles a week for work, that is why i carry the spare spark units. some folks have trouble but other than the orig coils cracking open, i have none?

Good to know, I`ll get some spares just in case.
Thanks.
