Well...da fun never ends, does it? :head bang:
I thought I was getting really bad fuel mileage lately, until I discovered my odometer isn't working all the time. The trip meter also isn't registering correctly. It has gotten worse in the last week, to where it has only put on 2 miles in a weeks worth of riding, which is around 300 miles, all together. The speedo itself works fine...just the odo part is REALLY off!
Has anyone ever been into a 'Wing speedo? I'm wondering if it's worth attempting to rip into it to see if it is something I can fix, or just bite the bullet and see can I find a good working used one on fleecebay, or maybe a kind soul here might have one to offer up for sale.....
Anyone know if it is a do-able thing to tear into the speedo?

I know there are speedo places that redo them, so if they can do it you can do it. If it's already not working and you may have to replace it anyway I'd give a try. And then you can let us know how to do it.

If it indicates speed the cable must be okay, so I'm guessing there is some sort of gear drive that works the odometer. Never seen a Honda speedometer apart but have seen car speedometers apart and they have a worm gear that runs the odometer. I'm guessing the bike speedometer is the same

Ya...I'm sure it's a gear drive in there, just not sure how I can get the speedo apart. Never really looked to see how they are put together. I'm hoping it is not crimped around the outside...that's gonna throw a spaniard in the works if it is. :builder:
I been lookin on feecebay....yeeesh! Speedos are a bit high, imho! I did see one that was a speedo/tach complete, with some cosmetic damage...it's at $65 last time I looked.

Well...the verdict is in...it's FUBAR.... :builder: :head bang:

The speedo IS crimped together, but I figured, "Nuttin frum nuttin leave nuttin", so I tore into it. Turns out, the main drive gear for the odo/trip odo is "apple cored" in the center, so it is no longer making contact with the drive gear from the speedo cable. :crying: No way to fix it, no adjustments, nada. The only way to correct it is to replace the gear with a good one...which I do not have.
I did at least get to clean the backside of the glass, and the face of the speedo. I have always thought the speedo had sat with water in it at one time, and sure enough, the rust on the back of the cover proves this. The PO told me the speedo had been replaced, so I knew that.
I just sprayed some silver paint on the inside of the rear cover(so the backlights would show better), then put it all back together. I just went around the block, and the speedo still works  :smilie_happy: , so I'm good. Now, I just have to locate a speedo...even one that doesn't work. The gears might be good...I'll check with a local salvage place tomorrow, and see do they have one for less than $100!

I'm sure I read somewhere that the speedo from a CB750K are compatible with the GL1100.
IF thats true then you can probably also use one from a CB550-four. I swapped out a dead speedo from my CB550-four from a CB750K and it worked just fine other then being about 8kph off at 100kph (read 108kph @ 100kph) but then maybe it was the Officer's Speedo that was out????? :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy: Nice guy, just gave a warning that time.

Bidding has ended on this item. The seller has relisted this item or one like this.
:Awe:

Story o me life! I just now saw this...dangit.
Would the calibration be ok on an '81, tho? I noticed the trip odo is at the top, where mine is at the bottom...and where the heck is the reset knob?

It's just been relisted for $29.95 BIN!!! The tach needle is broken. IF this speedo will not be calibrated properly for the '81, I can't even use it for parts, since the trip odo is in a different location....at least I don't think it would work. I may go for it anyway. It does have nice lenses for the oil/turn/neutral lights.... :eek:k:

If the 80 and 81 have the same size wheel calibration should be the same.

If you come up empty let me know, I have a Speedo I could open up and compare the gear.

Done deal! Got it for $29.95...+shipping total was $42 & change! I can live wid dat!
He re-listed it as a "Buy it Now", which is cheaper than before...the Buy it now before was $42! Whew! :heat:
Thanks for the tip there, slabghost!!

You are welcome. I almost bought them myself. The tach needle is an easy fix. Congrats. Glad I could help.

Can't wait to see if it can be fixed. Supposedly there was something done to make it obvious that the odometer had been tampered with but I can't remember what it was/is. Also, it strikes me as funny what the antique car world pays to have gauges fixed and here is someone on this forum taking one apart, diagnosing it, ordering repair parts and not only probably make a successful repair, but the rest of us will know how to also. Just yesterday, I fixed the control head on my radio with information from this forum. How AWSOME!!!!

If I recall the numbers wouldn't line up properly anymore.

I gotta say, taking the speedo/tach apart isn't that easy to do, and putting it back together ain't pretty, either! The stainless trim that goes around the beltline of the gauges is crimped on, and the piece isn't very thick to begin with. Re-crimping was a lesson in patience that I failed. :builder: It'll hold, but it ain't purdy! I wound up runnin a wrap of duct tape around it just to make sure it would stay together, and watertight. Mother Honda did NOT plan on any servicing for these gauges! :fiddle:

The tamper resistant deal with odos does have to do with the numbers not lining up properly. Since I wasn't actually moving the numbers, that wasn't a problem. :good:

In the pics that schmidtap posted in the "LED" thread, his speedo goes to 150mph, and it look exactly like the one I bought....this might get interesting!
